This thread saved me loads of time doing the initial service after I bought my 2.4, well done to all contributors!
I ended up having to improvise as I couldn't get the little pump for the oil. With the help of an extra pair of hands I fed a small bit of rubber fish tank tube from the filler holes up through the engine bay to a small funnel. Took a wee bit longer but a much cheaper solution and really simple if you don't have a pump handy. |

Tried finding the tube in the garage...... No idea! It's roughly the same spec as a garden hose. As long as you can fit it into the filler hole at one end and insert a small funnel into the other you'll be fine. I only used clear tubing so u could see the fluid going in, garden hose would have done in a pinch.

The filler hole is about 13mm, so you need a pipe of less diameter to fit Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

While I am on - anyone thought about a X ENG magnetic drain plug to catch any swarf (and therefore give an early warning of any issues)?

Just followed this guide to replace all my oils, which I got from Opie and were to the spec detailed by others in this post. I also changed the air and fuel filters too as these are easy to do and relatively cheap. Gives me peace of mind that all aspects of a service are now new.
Great guide in this post - thanks to all contributors! One point to note is that my gearbox filler and drain plugs were hex sockets too, and it's a 2013 2.2 puma 110. At least I didn't have to go and buy a 5 torx bit! There seems to be some variation here so worth checking what you have before you start. There is also some variation in the quantities of lubes required. I went by my owners handbook on page 101. Perhaps LR varied the capacity for the 2.2? Thanks again Jon |

I really enjoyed this thread!!
I have only one problem from my oil filling this summer: I was able to put in much more oil than the 2.2 litres in my gearbox until it overflowed. There was no levelplug around the gearbox and because of that I thought the box should be filled until overflow. Now I´m having trouble with noise and "clunks" from the driveline or gearbox when starting on low gear and reverse. (no issue when driving on higher gears) Theres is also an oil leak between the front diff and the propshaft. (The Defender has only run 85000 km) First: Is there a serious troble if the gearbox gets to high oil level? Second: Could my trouble now have to do with too high gearbox oil level? Forestman - I would drop the oil from the gearbox asap, and refill with the correct quantity
Hopefully your problems will cease, otherwise you may have blown a seal... Cheers Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

I seem to be making a habit of reviving old threads - but thanks very much for the advice in this thread, given me a good idea of DIY maintenance on the Defender.
With regard to grease UJs, is there a nipple fitted - which grease is preferred? thanks! My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html |

The MT82 seems to have 2 filler plugs, what happens if you use the one more to the front which has a much better excess?

Hello,
I'm new to Defenders and have a Oct 2015 Puma 2.2 with DPF XS with 13k on the clock. Having read all the knowledgeable posts I decided to change the gear box oil and transfer box. I have managed to identify the outlet plugs, but am struggling to identify the inlet plugs - can someone help me please? For information I have researched via You Tube and a chap gave a demonstration on a 2.4 TDI, but I don't know if the gear and transfer box layout are the same? Any help will bee much appreciated. Regards Jonathan |
