Just bought one for my TDCI and going to fit it this weekend so will find out soon. Reports I have heard so far are very good.

I'm interested in user feedback too as I've been mulling this mod over since having a look at it on a static gearbox on the synchro stand at Billing. it kind of solves a problem I don't have but I can still justify it to myself based on one or two uphill/low box type scenarios where momentum can get lost in a slow gear change.
One reservation I have and I ask the experts on here; what's the general view on whether this mod is going to be good for the gearbox long term? in my own experience the puma box doesn't seem to like to be rushed and I imagine (but could be totally wrong) that this mod, by its very nature and intention, is basically rushing the box albeit, because of the change of pivot etc., doing it in a predictable way. Interested in thoughts all round. Cheers |

That's a good point, unless this has been taken into consideration with the design of the shifter?

Sort of related question while we're talking about kits like this.....
My puma gets a bit cranky with changes between first and second, it feels exactly like knackered synchromesh in my old series 3. Do defenders suffer the same problems or is fitting a kit like this likely to be the solution? Maybe hopeful thinking but I'd hoped they'd ironed out synchro problems after all this time! |

I think the problem is that the OEM linkage becomes progressively worse over time because the plastic parts wear and split causing the shifting to become vague and sloppy. The new linkage seems to be much better engineered with better tolerances that should prevent this happening. I think that we still need to be sympathetic when changing gear owing to so many moving parts within the transmission.

Thanks for the reply, I'm having bad dreams about gearbox rebuilds!
When I bought the puma I was surprised at how slow and deliberate the changes had to be to prevent crunching! Glad to know it's likely to be something simple to fix! |

I got myself one of these kits last week and fitted it over the weekend. The gear change is a lot shorter now, I'd say distance between first and second is about the distance that it used to be from first to neutral.
It makes the gear change a lot better and feels much more like driving a modern car, allowing you to get up the gears much quicker. You do however have to use a bit more pressure to engage gears due to the decrease leverage but, although it is noticeable, you get used to it pretty quickly. I didn't really have any gear change issues before fitting the kit so can neither confirm nor deny if it will fix anybody's problems but I did notice that the nylon "ball" on the old shifter had cracked, I've also seen pictures of other people's balls ( ) that have completely disintegrated which probably could lead to issues? The slickshift does away with the nylon ball and has a machined stainless ball instead. Oh and I almost forgot, before the mod I didn't have a rattly gear stick that some people experience, however with the reduction in throw there is an increase in vibration through the gear stick which meant that I had to remedy the rattle with some glue. There's plenty of threads on here that cover how to do that, just worth considering so you don't have to take the stick off twice. Tom @tditomprice 100” Defender Hybrid 2010 Alaska White 90 HT |

Hi no need to glue the weights on the gear stick,Just put a couple of zip ties around the base of the gear stick. This solves two problems in one..It stops the weights annoyingly buzzing and secondly ties the locating ears together for more solid location.
Happy crunching ..i mean gear changing... |
