And what, replacing them with some self serving, power crazed, career politician would be an improvement? I don't see that ending well. No let's stick with what we have its not like they ain't cost effective when you offset the tourism revenue they generate and the international image a monarch presents as head of state carries weight too, then there's the political checks and balances of a constitutional monarchy helping to curb some of the dafter ideas of the political classes. All in my opinion obviously. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Well the alternative to a Royal is a President... I don't think the UK could afford that, and think of the elections...not to mention the corruption that comes with it... That would just make the rich richer and the poor poorer as does everything we change these days!

I dont want to get into an argument about the monarchy on a car forum but a modern sensible democracy will have no place for a head of state who's only qualification for the job was an accident of birth..your views are (no matter how illogical)are in keeping with many in this country if the poles are anything to go by..However in time logic will prevail and we will be rid of this anachranism that has poluted our fine country for many years. In reality your last sentence is nonsense the queen is nothing more than a figurehead and i can think of many acts over the last 30 years you could classify as daft that she signed into law without a peep! The world will be a very different place in a hundred years time and i believe that your views by then will be in the minority and the monarchy will be where it belongs a distant memory probably like the combustion engine!

Why do folk keep banging on about te alternative being a president as head of state having power..the queen in reality has no power in real terms even if its still within her perview to stop acts by not signing them (she never does because she cannot as its an unwritten agreement that she wont)You can have a head of state chosen by the people to be president or chief high exicutioner ( the name doesnt matter)if you want but they have no power and they are not there by birthright.

As the saying goes " if it aint broke "

Our system works well but could benefit from a little tinkering. I even think the house of Lords should have more power as a 2nd chamber. After all they don't have to pander to short term fashions and can take a long view of legislation any system where the term is short ( 5 years ) leads to a fashion parade and becomes more about style over substance.

You can of course make the Lords more accountable with rights and responsibilities but still with a monarch at the head. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

You do realise the next king will be Charles the buffoon........he may well provide the last nail in the coffin unless he ditches queen camilla! Laughing Thats the point i suppose it doesnt matter how idiotic or evil a heir to the throne is they get the gig because they came out of the royal ballsack first. Laughing

Can the people not vote for a head of state for a fixed term of 5-10 years and do away with the hereditory element and leave the sax cobergs to the theme park where they belong!its bizarre that citizens of the 21 century do not see the foolishness of having a head of state by birthright ...why not have mps, judges, and the like chosen in the same way by accident of birth!...
