Prop shaft play
Gents
The Landrover man is telling me that there is too much play in the 110s prop shaft and that the transfer box shaft thingie is goosed ( I think that he's right) but how much play should there be, just so I can check

If you are on about propshaft yokes, there should be no play in them, sometimes a small amount of play can be taken up by greasing, the problem is a lot of people neglect the props and fail to grease them, this leads to premature wearing of the bearings inside the yokes. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Should be no play in yokes as above. And no play in propshaft sliding joint (though a little won't cause too much of a problem). The front output flange of the transfer box is supported by a straight ball bearing, so a little radial play in that is normal. Should be no play in the rear one.

Rotational play - i.e. driveline slop - some is normal. Depending on the wear in downstream components there can be up to 1/4 turn, this will cause clonking etc. but won't actually fail dramatically. Though it can increase wear on the propshaft joints themselves.

I'm no expert but can't see how without taking the gearbox apart he can determine the transfer box shaft thingie is goosed - assuming he's referring to the well known problem of the extension shaft / adapter shaft?

good luck whatever - remember in terms of rotational slack there always appears to be quite a bit.

is there not and inspection plate with 6 bolts on that is easily removable? My 109 thread
