It would appear JLR are having deaper thoughts about how to replace a 68 year old icon.
The new Defender has been pushed back another year. The DC100 was designed at the end of 2010, and shown at Frankfurt in 2011. According to this article, the production vehicle wonīt be out until 2019. 71 years after the first Land Rover went into production........... This cannot be part of the strategy, leaving the market open for three years. Bringing out a production vehicle some eight years after showing the concept to the public, isnīt common practice either. It just doesnīt make sense.

I think they had to go "back to the drawing board" once they saw how the DC 100 was so poorly received by their intended market. (specifically over the last year as it has drawn more attention, and not of the positive type) Add to that how the last 12-24 months have shown just how much love there is for the Defender, people have been more vocal on what they think the new vehicle should be.
I know that since the announcement of the end of production, that looming date has always seemed far off in the future, but it quickly became reality. I can't help but think JLR has realized just how much of an icon the Defender is, and if they miss the mark just a little, that could be a fail of EPIC proportions. (DC100) They have a very strong brand right now, this next vehicle could launch them in into the stratosphere, or, as mentioned, be an epic fail. it's a Landrover thing... my renovation thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic40792.html |

I suspect the gap is to allow time for The Defender to die gracefully. By the time the new one comes out our cars will look even more like relics and the new Defender range will more naturally fit into the wider Land Rover family.
That and the fact Ratan Tata keeps saying "No Gerry, that is just another Range Rover drawing with slightly different lights". Their best bet would be to get someone else in to design it and then let GM take the credit right at the end by changing the lights and bumpers. It worked on the Freelander 1 and MGF. 2015 110 USW XS in Santorini with premium contrast leather seats in tan/black, black headlining and with Dual Finish alloys (in the garage, now on Wolf rims with Goodyear MT/Rs) 2012 '62' 2.2 X-Tech 110 USW now gone ... 1984 90 soft top with full roll cage, 200 tdi engine etc now sold 2012 USW XS 2.2 "FUU" now gone.... |

Very valid points made there. Reliability and durability, the very essence of what a Defender class of vehicle is about, have got to be top priorities. It isnīt a case of defending the crown, it is about winning it back.
Additionally, JLR have manouvred themselves into a corner on this, by not having the answer ready, when the time came. The longer they wait, the better the answer will have to be, when it comes. It is all good stuff for the current Defender. We had an actual 1-ton. I only found that out last month after going though a load of old Land Rover brochures with my boss. Apparently the suspension was a bit hard. |

Oh is that your website? I've spent quite a lot of time reading it and looking at the pictures.
I was lusting after that one at the LRO show, I think it was my favourite of all the ones on the displays. I'll have a chat to my boss tomorrow if I remember, he has loads of pictures though I haven't seen many of Land Rovers. |

I agree, however I also think that they want the separation distance between 'old' and 'new' because I suspect 'new' will be aimed at a completely different market. I just don't think JLR are interested in the the hard core utility/farming/military markets any more. My bet would be we'll see a 'lifestyle' vehicle aimed at the 20-30 somethings as a leisure vehicle - Suzuki Santana meets LS200 Animal, a sort of 'original Freelander' replacement if you like... ------------------------------- ðēðŧ 1986 ex-Military 90 NAD 2.5 Soft Top. Yes, that's the one. On 9.00R16 Michelin XS which I rather liked the look of too. That size tyre are very hard to come by. It was the only Land Rover at the show I liked enough to get a proper picture of. |
