United Kingdom 2016 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Scotia Grey
Ive said before - it worries me with these defender's oil specs.

I dont believe the dealers fully follow them all (although they have more of a chance of doing it) so what chance does most indep. garages have...

I know the indep guys are great and im not knocking that - its just with many different specs and possibly less time to research etc - i bet you they put in the wrong spec more than the right spec (especially if you go to an none LR one were its just listed as a 5/30!!) Mike

While LR specifies ACEA A5/B5 5w30 oil for the Puma, it is by no means the best oil for the engine. This will depends on where you are: climatic conditions, quality of diesel, etc.

For example, in SA we have a much warmer climate than EU & sh*t diesel, so really in SA we should be using an API CH-4/CI-4 or ACEA E5/6/7 fully-synthetic oil, viscosity 5w40.

I threw out that Ford oil after 3000km and never went back to it.The loose spanners in the motor have gone and now have a oil to protect my engine and not fuel cosumption. Puma 110 SW

I`m not sure, but the oil pump must be designed to deal with the viscosity given by a XXW-30 oil. Danielle ( Whistle ) should jump in again. Puma 110" SW

5w-50 A3/B3/B4 synthetic and changed every 6000km.It handles our heat and no cold start problems. Puma 110 SW

But if I tell to the forum this and someone will have problems with the engine (not related to the oil)? May be LR look for the reason and invalidate the warranty?

You mean a 5w40/50 is better than 5w30?

I fully agree, it looks like LR only specified the oil that would be ideal for EU, NOT the rest of the world.

I have a friend in SA who has switched to Shell Rimula HX7 and says the landy runs much more smoothly. He buys the oil and force the dealer to use this when doing the service.

viscosity is a different characteristic than HTHS.

for hot climate is better a 5W50 or a 10W60 than a 5W30 and all of these oils can have low or high HTHS.

a good HTHS is better for the shear strength

Same happened with VW and there 0w30 longlife.Many top end failures and oil cosumption.They changed to there 5w-30 but still not good in hot climate like ours. Puma 110 SW

Whereas main bearing wear increased with the viscosity below 2.2 HTHS, the con-rod bearing showed virtually no wear at the lowest tested 1.8 oil
