Scotland 2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Orkney Grey
Drive Flanges
On my factory tour I noticed the rear drive flanges on the defenders coming of the production line were different from my 2012 model. They didn't have the plastic caps. Is this an upgrade and if so would it be retrofitable to mine when the time comes?

There's a HD version available. They come with a screw-on cap. Could that possibly be what you've seen?

They are the older design of half shaft as used on early 90's and Discoverys Thumbs Up



Imagine someone has welded your half shaft to the drive flange and made it look a bit prettier - that's basicly what they are.

Some argue they are better as it removes one pair of drive flanges from your axles - less splines to wear out, others argue by removing the drive flange you are more likely to damage the half shaft or diff - removes an easy to change week point. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

It was the ones coming off the production line with the thin one shown in the picture. Could they have changed back to earlier design? Would this be due to the 150hp tune on limited edition models?

You could do I suppose, you would need to check the number of splines as it can be a bit of a nightmare but I'm sure if you went to your local dealer you buy a brand new one off the shelf and it fit fine Thumbs Up

Sorry to ask and hijack this thread but - during a recent service the indy said one side of my rear drive shafts and flange was getting worn, possibly because it was running dry on that side. Is that something that can be replaced easily, would you do both sides, and use o/e parts or are pattern parts ok?

If its the separate type, i.e. separate flange type, the genuine LR ones are about £10 or less each, cheap enough to not consider pattern parts (I think).

I noticed this and asked during the factory tour, but our guide wasn't able to tell me ( He hadn't noticed to be honest). Microcat isn't showing any change of rear driveshaft arrangement on the system either. I would hazard a guess and say that Land Rover have acknowledged the rear drive shaft - flange wear, but not made an 'Official announcement'. Just quietly backward superceded the parts. I will ask my friends on the inside at the local dealers if they have any knowledge.

I changed mine for the one piece ones a while back. Far better than 2 piece ones I chewed through 2 sets of flanges in 90k Its never over in my land rover.

That sounds more likely. I doubt very much if they would have acknowledged any problems exist right at the end of production, especially given the history of not admitting their have been problems with the intermediate shaft since 2007 ...or indeed water ingress over the past 68 years. Steve.

water leaks - are you sure. I'd always assumed the issue was condensation resulting from my sweaty feet?

I just checked my Heritage & it seems to have the 2 piece set up with seperate drive flanges. Also has a plastic hub cab:
