Avion, suggest you ask me again when I will reach 320.000 KM, which at the annual mileage I'm doing now will be in 50 years or so.
![]() Seriously, nothing bad to say about mine sofar. Except, I am a bit confused about what is meant by "flanges" here, see someone also mentioned "half shafts" in his post. Well, my rear half shafts were replaced by JLR under the extended warranty, at about 65.000 KM it must have been. I had been complaining about a clunk when changing gears, and they traced it back to the rear halfshafts at the time. Now all fine, but barely 13.000 KM further with the new ones. At the local dealership - the last 110 SW on the floor: the rear has the "thin" Dicovery setup as per Shaggydog's reply, and the fronts the standard 2-piece setup as per Avion and Eric replies.
When pointed out to the sales guy - he immediately recognized the rears as the old "Discovery" setup. On the last runout models - maybe there was a scarcity of some parts and an abundance of others that could be safely swapped/used for the same purpose. Must say - makes for an "unique" vehicle - the different "flanges" front & rear ... (A colleague of mine is interested in buying the vehicle - may be able to snap the necessary pics then) |

Hi ericvv, Seems you have already had your half shafts replaced & I would imagine they would have replaced the flanges at the same time, as both wear & cause that clunking. Seems the HD route is the only way of preventing this, although I note from your photo that there seems to have been a liberal supply of copper grease applied to the flange & presumably the splines on the half shafts. This may well help slow the wear down. As Sadi mentioned in the last post he has seen a 110 SW with the one piece flange half shaft on the back & seperate flange shaft set up on the front, so must have run out of flanges! |

When I did the factory tour in November I saw that there were one piece drive flanges fitted to 110 vehicles' rear axles. Not the same as the older rounded 90 versions, but a squarer look:

The only very vague reason I think they may have done this was to mimic the series 1 setup which had the 2 piece arrangement on the front and a different one piece set up on the rear.
![]() Click image to enlarge Personally, I am of the opinion that it is better to have the 2 part setup as it will wear out your drive flange, then for under £20 you can replace it and off you go again, rather than having to change the whole shaft - admittedly a much less common occurrence. By using HD Drive Flanges your moving the wear away from the drive flange and onto the Half Shaft which is much more expensive to replace. Just my 2p worth ![]() Self confessed mileage hunter ![]() |

Avion, the copper grease in my picture was done on my request each time my dealer change from winter to summer wheels and back, so it was just on the outside of the hubs. So when dealer replaced the half shafts, I have no idea if they put any grease in really. By the way, I now am not using copper grease any more for the wheels, but use ceramic grease instead which is void of any metals content, and which I think is a better grease for where alloy wheels contact steel hubs in the summer. Use it year round now, so also for the HD Wolf steel winter wheels. ![]() The stuff below. A bit of Thread Exhumation.
Now Microcat has caught up it tells that the Rear shafts when from two piece back to one piece on VIN GA481822 Part number RH LR072976 LH LR072977 And If you have the earlier versions it will supersede to those numbers. |

Ive just ordered 2 new rear halfshafts. They have indeed changed to one piece. Cheaper too.
Will post some pics when they arrive. |

The one piece setup is far superior in every way. Great news they've gone back to it. Save me retrofitting them now

Yep.
They superceed the spline and flange type. Give the dealer your VIN and they should be listed against your vehicle. |
