Interesting stuff.
Sounds like a decent upgrade then. Sadly wont fit mine as I'm on drums on the rear so would need to chop the half shaft down a bit to get it to fit ![]() Self confessed mileage hunter ![]() |

so is there a reason why they from one-piece to two-piece design?
I mean surely the one-piece shaft will be much cheaper to make and fit, right? |

I've been told that
1/ one piece are cheaper because there are less machining operations, generally people who off road prefer 2 piece as the flange / shaft interface is designed to break before anything else and make changing the broken flange / shaft easy, 1 piece ones have an undercut that is also designed to break first but makes it harder to get the shaft out of the diff/ axle when it breaks. 2/ The front has to be two piece because there is a CV joint between the shaft and the flange to allow the front wheels to turn the key with 2 piece is good lubrication on assembly, 3/ The spline failures are generally related to a dry joint so checking and lubrication front and rear 2 piece arrangement is a good idea DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

I have a worn shaft /flange on my 110
Shaft was £30, Flange was £15 (for an OEM part, nonetheless) I think I'll stick to the 2 piece ones ![]() ![]() |

Just a heads up... Splined joints, as with gears should be replaced as pairs. Otherwise you only solve half the problem. You might find those new flanges don't last anywhere near as long as the originals did before getting to the same state because of the existing wear on the halfshaft. |
