The Austin Mini remains the icon that it always was. It had a finite tenure, and even the last ones, with their fine little chrome bumpers, relate to the first 1959 creation.
Just like the Defender. If BMW or whoever, had just upgraded the lights, fitted energy absorbing plastic bumpers, squeezed airbags, modern drivetrains, a navigation system into the old shell, they could have eased a few more years out of the old girl, but wouldn´t have done it any favours in the process, whatsoever...... At some point you have to let it go. My son was hit three times by an aquaplaning (and spinning) Audi A8 on the autobahn this last summer. He and his passenger climbed out with only minor whiplash. He was in a far bigger and safer car (a 2011 535) than even the current Mini. When he, after looking for a replacement for his beloved "Bimmer", announced he would buy a Mini Cooper S, my eyes rolled. I reminded him of how the BMW had probably saved his life..... and he reminded me that i do most of my miles in a vehicle with a bodyshell from 1948. I have seen these articles too. Identical wording on every website. But nowhere have I seen quotation marks, or even that a Land Rover executive said so. Gerry McGovern is credited with a few comments in the article, but the statement regarding its placement in the lineup is the journalist's narrative. It might be pure fiction which has been copied and pasted across websites. Unless someone has seen a quote from a proper Land Rover spokesperson to say that the next Defender will sit between Discovery and Range Rover, I'm calling BS. |

Rumors say earliest 2017...probably 2018..but really who knows currently, probably very few. As for an actual Date I would say JLR may have a 'target date' but in reality this could be +/- a month or so...
Just look at the planed 'last order'...'last production date/s' for the end of the current Defender... 
As for when can I drive a new one... 
1. Is the replacement ready, rumors are that it's finished. 2. Where will it be built...rumors are eastern Europe. 3. When will the Production facility come on-line, rumors are it will run for 'several months' to road test and generate stock, shake out pre-production issues. 4. Does this mark the Defender's return to America, if so lead times 'from order to drive away' need to be on US expected timescales. It would be great if JLR managed to keep this a secret until the big reveal, but the replacement will be one of the most searched for 'spy shots' for a new vehicle in many years. There's a huge opportunity here in Oz (and in the USA) for a vehicle that can tow 4000kg. Maybe JLR will recognise this and produce the 2018 Defender with this capability.

Me too. I was with Darrells tour.
The suggestion was new Defender will be built in Solihull and Slovakia. The pre-production ones have already been built and are in building Y2/Y3. It is immediately recognisable as Defender but is all alloy as per the other products no steel chassis. It will be customisable and will have pick up and hard top variants. They are aiming for 100,000 vehicles plus. It will have models that are aimed as being working vehicles to target the Toyota Hilux Ford Ranger markets. They seem to really want to get it right. It will not be DC100. As far as up market models it was interesting to see all the Jaguar SUV parked up outside Lode Lane. This is where many of the old Defender workforce will be redeployed to. It looks like a real Porsche Cayman eater and if anything is going upmarket from Discovery that is it. |

Is it the plan that we will see the new Defender at one of this years motor shows in its true intended form rather than a DC100 style concept?
With availability to physically buy one being 2018? |

Really? Cannot believe they would have avoided some 'spy shots'! Great news it will look like a 'Defender'! And top marks if all alloy... just image, not having to ever replace the chassis!

I'm genuinely excited for the new defender, but for me it MUST be built in the UK. If everything from Minis to Range Rovers to Toyotas can be built here, then the defender can be!
Build disco sports, evoques and XFs abroad if you want! As long as the new def is recognisable and seriously capable, it'll get my vote. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

That is what was said. Y2/Y3 is preproduction area to test and learn production techniques. This makes sense other manufacturers have these in my experience to learn what issues they have before tooling a full line. Those buildings are definitely not on the tour. If someone gets a glimpse through an open door we will be lucky. It is really happening when we know that Krupp have made the press tools and delivered them.
Speculation mode on, I wouldn't be surprised if we get some images released shortly after the end of current production. Speculation mode ends... |
