I can't see it being anything to do with the transfer box and I would not be changing that on a trial and error basis. When you had the clutch done did you have a new flywheel? ------------------------------------------------

No the flywheel was not changed with the clutch.
Since day one I thought if left like it was coming from a diff - but front and rear have been checked and are ok. I have been planning on changing the transfer box to a disco one with better ratios - so it is a good excuse |

I had the transfer box in my 90 converted to the Disco 1.2 ratio a couple of months ago and I would certainly recommend that. It drives a lot better at speed.
I reckon the judder problem maybe due to your flywheel but it's best to ask someone with more knowledge of these things. ------------------------------------------------ 2002 TD5 90 HT County |

The DMF is the most common cause of clutch judder on a TD5 by far. It is a false economy not to replace the DMF if replacing a clutch, since in normal use the clutch will outlive the flywheel.
It is also possible that you'll get judder if the engine and gearbox mounting rubbers are going soft, or if the suspension bushes are worn allowing too much movement in the (usually, rear) axle mountings. The DMF is the worst feature of the TD5 Defender or Disco, and its appalling performance is the reason that LR reverted to a conventional flywheel and clutch on the TDCi. It is regrettable that they made arguably a worse job of the latter even than the former! |

I was going to mention bushes too, especially rear shock / damper bushes.
When moving of weight is obviously shifted to the rear and poor bushes move around a lot giving a feeling of the being drivetrain issues. I'd also agree that it's usually the rear too. |

Sounds like clutch judder . You'll more than likely have some hi spots on the flywheel

Had it on my Td5 Disco 2 and have it now on my Td5 90.
The disco I bought at 120k miles and sold at 180k miles. As far as I know the clutch hadn't been replaced. Judder never materialised into anything more. |

I've just taken my engine out to do some bits and bobs, and whilst there fitted a new clutch and DMF.
Clutch looked almost unworn and barely any play in DMF at 142k miles!
