tbh warpig I would concentrate on taking images in good light. It's not the camera that's a problem, you can take great shots with a compact, a pinhole, a holga, anything. It's the light that IS the shot, so if you shoot something on a dull, flat light day, your image will look dull and flat and there isnt a great deal you can do about it. Light and the quality of light and knowing when to take a shot and when to leave the camera in the bag is the hardest thing to learn about photography (I'm a professional photographer and I also teach it)

I have to agree with BigMike. Light is all. Though I'm not a photographer, I'm a film maker, and the same applies.

Mainly TV commercials, the odd music video if the band are good, Mike. Sometimes documentaries. Most of my work is comedy based. That picture was shooting one of the latest 'Specsavers' commercials.
I had a cheeky look at your website - love the work. |

Guys, I have a Sony Alpha 550 as my first DSLR. I love it and am learning it's tricks all the time. I am definately going to try HDR as a technique. I assume you must always have your tripod ready in the back? I need to get myself a proper camera kit bag.
I recently bought a telephoto zoom and absolutely love it. On my list also is a fish eye lens, wide angle lense and a copy of Photoshop for my Mac. My best tip is to ditch the flash when you can. Bleached photos really annoy me. Although technically notive and very yellow, I love the photo in my profile pic taken on Eurotennel. I wish I had knwon about HDR then! Keep the photos coming chaps... |

That's a great camera.
I'm very into Fast lenses for a shallow depth of field. And HDR is really simple. There's a cheap program call 'photomatix' that will stitch your pictures together easily, and will help you get started with HDR photography. You get the best results with shots that have light and dark areas. BM, it's REALLY not about the camera! Spending loads on a camera will only make controls easier to use - it won't make you a good photographer!
There was a fashion photographer who recently posted a load of photos from a fashion shoot - pretty cutting edge stuff, and the critics were fawning over the beautiful pictures which they assumed came from a £5k camera body. About a week later he let it slip that he'd done the whole shoot on his iPhone as a technical exercise. It demonstrates that the camera is unimportant - but that lighting, subject and technical ability are very important. Chaps - there's a guy on here who has taken some photos of his 110 with a technique that makes it look like the subject is a toy or model. I think it involves tilting the camera when shooting. I can't find the member, his photos or remember his name. Do you know the technique?
