Damn that thing crashed into the ugly forest, never mind the ugly stick! i hadn't looked for pictures, just remembered hearing the reassuring noises being made regarding it being more utilitarian. Its all that clingy chrome lathered over the front end at crazy angles that makes it look so bad.
That new disco5 looks quite nice to be honest, kind of like an inflated discovery sport. Not many clues as to any of the running gear or power train of the new disco either, although it doesn't look like its based on the T5 platform as from the shots of the rear as it looks different. Quite a substantial towing bracket at the rear poking out of the bumper, looks like it doesn't quite fit or belong there? Surprisingly narrow tyres too. What about this new family of Defenders? If the RR and Disco sit closely together, McGovern says the new line-up of Defenders will stretch out the Land Rover brand. ‘Discovery is getting closer to Range Rover,’ he says. ‘But the Defenders, when you see those coming, they’ll really bring clarity to the three-family scenario. They’re out there, a working tool, probably closest to the original Land Rover heartland, but still relevant.’ And whereas McGovern worries a utilitarian look limits the appeal of the Range Rovers and Discos, it’s less of an issue for Land Rover’s third family (previewed by the DC100 concepts, above). ‘For the Defender it’s something else. There is that utilitarian look, but it’s inextricably linked to the original so you get over it. The Defender is about durability – you kick the hell out of them and they get up for more.’ Will there be more than one Defender? There will be a number of different Defender models, to help Land Rover sell over 70k units a year, and to appeal to the Land Rover traditionalists who might perhaps be put off by the new Discos and RRs. ‘We need the Defender to wash its wash in terms of investment,’ admits McGovern. ‘So there will be opportunities for different-sized vehicles: in the Middle East, for example, they want really big vehicles; in other markets the appetite is for small vehicles; and I’d argue you need the iconic three-door there as well.’ Not that the styling will be retro, as McGovern says the new models will bear no resemblance to the DC100 concepts: ‘I think the Defender was good for it’s time, but I think we’ve got to be quite radical, and create if we create a vehicle that is special and does resonate with people, they will forget what they had before.’ |

I really want Mr McGovern to get the replacement Defender right, but to often when I read PR from the Land Rover Design Director, I come away with doubts, remembering those quotes that appear to show Land Rover would be happy to break the link with the best 4X4 by far...
'if we create a vehicle that is special and does resonate with people, they will forget what they had before.’ I would argue that you would want the exact opposite, you want New Defender owners to feel like they are driving in the tracks of all previous Defenders, that they are driving in the sum total of the experience and expertise over 70 years of doing things and going places others cant. Maybe the challenge for Land Rover would be helped if we did all forget, but I doubt that's going to happen... 
Land Rover (Mr McGovern) will succeed if: 1. The New Defender corrects those annoying shortcomings of the current Defender. Those issues that you and I set about correcting during ownership, those issues that if the evolution of the Defender had been constant and not intermittent we would have now, Land Rover have to take all these steps in one go. 2. The New Defender should present a 'platform' for all the various adaptions of its current markets together with creating new ones. Land Rover and quality Independents should be able to take the New Defender in almost 'any' direction. 3. The New Defender should avoid being overly complicated, overly designed, difficult to service, with a high cost of ownership. It should be accessible so interesting people do interesting things with it. Overall Land Rover needs to drive the history of the Defender forward, not leave it at the roadside. To position it above the discovery would be a huge mistake imho as it then pretty much means it will be a lifestyle only vehicle rather than capable of being a workhorse. This also goes against the historic brand line up mantra of defender - utility, disco - crossover and RR - luxury. Late in 2018 would also be a huge disappointment. |

What I genuinely don't understand is why Toyoita are not going to try and fill this void with their 70's series which are so popular in Australia and parts of Africa.
