Question..If doing a t/box transfer and your getting an inde to do it, yet you supply the t/box, are you likely to get more selling your own box privately or just going for an exchange with the gearbox specialists? Mines only done 40k if that makes a difference?

Final confirmation if anyone was contemplating this as I was recently.
Great modification - even without the ECU remap (although I appreciate this will make it better again). Makes it much more driveable on the road in all the gears and no issues at all across the fields/tracks yesterday afternoon. Finally great service all round from AL Services in Poole. Thanks Tom for posting an update as I am having mine done on Wednesday. It's reassuring to know that the 1.2 ratio is good even without the remap. ------------------------------------------------

Glad that you're happy with it tasr12, if you do get round to having a tune it'll make it even nicer, even if it's a mild tune to get a bit more low down torque.
isacs - I sold mine for £150 and mine had done about 30k miles, they aren't really worth a great deal unless you find somebody that's in desperate need of a 1.2 box. I wish I'd kept mine tbh, just in case my replacement went bang |

I have Disco2 and Def 130 - both on 235/85/R16 tyres. D2 has 1:1,2 transfer box, 130 has 1:1,4. Up to 90kmh 130 is more responsive and much easier to start moving.
D2 - heavily loaded for long trips (4 people, roof tent, sleeping platform inside, ....) with total weight a bit over 3000kg and tuned TD5 engine is a bit harder to start moving - need a bit more work with clutch. But it is better for long cruising. For 130 I have prepared overdrive, slower gears to diffs and 255/85/R16 tires - it will be a bit slower without overdrive, and bit faster with. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufÃnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo |

I did the 1.2 change on my 110 with stock map (265/75/16s) about a month ago. It's fantastic. I find myself changing gears a bit more around town; but it makes the best difference on the highway. It's relatively quiet at 70+mph.
BTW, low ratio in a 1.2 is the same as a 1.4. So off-roading in low is the exact same. If you're off-roading in high and un/locked; you'll need a little more revs with the 1.2 vs the 1.4. As mk1collector mentioned, you'll get used to the "new driving style" fairly quickly. It's not bad, just a little different. BTW, at the same time I did the new clutch pedal spring trick.... WOW, I really needed to re-learn how to drive the 110!! hahaha |

I had my TD5 transfer box converted to the 1.2 ratio by Ashcrofts today and I am very pleased with the result.
Setting off in 1st gear is fine, acceleration is acceptable (given you don't buy a Defender for its 0 to 60 performance) and the drive is much improved at speed. Driving down this morning I got 29 mpg with the existing 1.4 ratio and on the way back 32mpg. I am sure an engine remap would be a further improvement but to be quite honest I am happy with the way it is (for now anyway) Thanks for all the useful comments on the subject. ------------------------------------------------ 2002 TD5 90 HT County |
