Gearbox soundproofing
So I'm in the process of soundproofing or rather reducing the noise. I've search many a thread as all good members should but I can't find any pics/reference to whether people put dynamat round the gearbox shroud. Everyone goes under seat and transfer box cover etc but does/has anyone covered the plastic shroud?

I was thinking of this myself, however, I can see one problem and that is the fact of moulding it to the contours of the shroud.
Dynamat is very versatile but I recon it'd be difficult and if you did best to take the shroud out and do it in your home r similar than fiddling in an awkward position for ages.

I think it can be done though, just not easy...

Maybe horizontal or vertical strips applied one at a time moulded in with roller and heat and then tape all of the joins.
Wouldn't be pretty but so what, it's a gearbox should 99.9% of the time hidden.

Dynamat does NOT sound proof anything!!! It simply stops vibrations and as the gearbox shroud has lots of different curves in it, it shouldn't rattle. I however did fit a layer of closed cell foam which has two benefits, one is it cuts out some noise and also stops some heat coming through from the gearbox area which can happen on long journeys with the drivers window open. Another trick to stop gearbox noise on a td5 is to fit a discovery 2 gearbox cover (which sits on top of the gearbox itself) and if you want to see pics I have a few in my build thread. Ray

And what about dash out and dynamat the bulkhead? Worth it?
I've done the tub and arches and the difference is very noticed. In fact I can now hear other squeaks and whistles from the front of the cab

Inside my gearbox cover was already a nice layer off foam. Looks standard to me.

I tried to find the picture off the disco cover but didn't find it. Roel

The tub and arches when covered in Dynamat makes a big difference because they are large flat panels which vibrate and rattle a lot while the car is moving so the deadening material makes the vibrations a lot less noticeable. Adding a layer of closed cell foam will cancel out some noise too. As for the bulkhead there are a few flat areas so it will make a little difference but not a massive one, the footwells is a good area to cover and filling the big hole in the passenger footwell (if you don't have aircon) will cut down on engine noise. Ray

cool then rays suggestion for the bell housing soundproofing would be first thing to do. loads of them on ebay for £20 ish quid, My 109 thread
