Vibration with hard throttle in 6th
First post for a while. Things have been OK for a fee month. Recently I notice a hard vibration, like driving over rumble strips, from the rear of the drive train when I push on hard in 6th gear from low revs. Only in 6th and only with a fairly hard push of the throttle.

Any ideas? Prop shaft, transfer box, rear diff?

I would say it's your clutch. The anti-rattle springs flog their holes out which causes the shudder.

Cheers,

Tim

Interesting. I get a similar sound if I shift early and let the vehicle pull up to speed. Like a rumble and a bucket of bolts shaking.

Clutch I expect. Or may be the gearbox. Do a bit more investigation. Note the speed and gear you are in when it happens. then report back Thumbs Up 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

Why are you pushing hard from low revs in 6th? It's an overdrive gear, so inevitably your going to stuff it up. Change down a gear or two, and then tank it.

i can get it to happen every time in top gear, around 50-55, floor it and it shakes, rattles and judders. Flooring it in other gears doesn't have the same effect.

Glad to hear its not just me. Its not the clutch, that was replaced less than 1500 miles ago under warantee and completely solved the previous transmission problem I had (sharp take up and high biting point).

As reported, its only in 6th, and not at unusually low revs. No problems in any other gears or at anything other than near-max throttle position. No unusual sounds from the box in 6th at 'lowr throttle positions. I do have BAS remap, so slightly more power going through the transmission than spec, but I dare say it will still happen if I reverted to standard tune (will try at the weekend). It sounds like something is starting to resonate given the combination of gear and power demand.

I too have the same juddering. I also have the BAS remap and the juddering only happens with the remap running. Thinking it might be the clutch slipping with the extra power??

Try putting the standard file back into the ecu and see if the juddering goes away.

Sorry, I have been away for a while and yet to try setting the remap back to standard, but the problem is deffinitely getting worse. It needs less throttle now in 6th to provoke the vibration. I have just extended my warantee for another year in expectation of a claim!
I will try going back to standard tune this weekend, but suspect the problem will still be there.
Power train issues are the only problems I have had with the Puma. The TD5 power train of my previous Defender seemed much tighter with mush less back lash. Its a shame since just about every other area of the vehicle is so much better than the TD5.

Build quality on the Puma drive train components is atrocious. The poor quality and failures seemed to happen not long after the Ford takeover. I suspect that Ford forced the suppliers prices down which resulted in poor build or imported cheap replicas of the components.

The best fix would be a TDV8 with auto box and transfer case, Followed by aftermarket props, diffs, drive shafts etc etc 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

MT-82 gearbox it will be std equipment in 2011 Mustangs. I believe the whole problem resides on the clutch. However, I do not see a mustang driver dealing with a dodgy 2nd gear.

I was adviced to fit an older Dodge Dart/Ford Falcon disc.

What is your dealer saying about your nth clutch? Puma 110" SW

United Kingdom 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS DCPU Orkney Grey
Hi All

I am new to the defender2 forum, so firstly hello and congratulations on a really good site.

I am also new to the Defender world having just recently purchased my 1st Defender, which is a 2011 110 DCPU, its one of the last 2.4 Puma engined ones in orkney.

I have been searching the forum in regard to this exact problem, which is a very bad vibration in 6th gear when accelerating.

Mine too has been remapped but by Charlie at Twisted and it too suffers with very bad vibrations between 1500 and 2000 rpm - only in 6th gear! There is no vibrations at all over 2000 rpm

Did anyone who was involved originally in this topic actually come up with an answer or find a solution as my dealer has drawn a blank!

Apart from that i am very happy with it Smile

It's just started on mine too... In 6th, any hard acceleration (??) around 50mph and I get a juddering, the strange thing is, it only happens in a relatively small rev range, say from 1800 - 2200rpm.. And 1st - 5th are fine.. WEIRD!
Mine's due to go in for a service soon, so I'll have the service chappies have a mooch.. ... ,-------,
