Thanks, Pete for clarifying. I presume the implied message here is it's a Bowler remap not a BAS one. This being in response to those who have suggested it is the same.

acuss01 - My takeaway from the above is the complete opposite to yours. Have you asked Bowler if the map is the result of work/development done completely in-house or whether they used a well-known third party expert in the field?

Hi Barney12

As stated by bell-auto-services, the companies that you are referring to are third parties and as such, any modifications that they may offer are not official/Land Rover approved. Therefore, any concerns that may arise due to these modifications would not be covered under the manufacturers warranty.

Regards

Ryan

Bowler have been referred to above - are you including Bowler in your definition of third parties and how are the warranty claims managed?

Their is no need to ask them its been said over two years ago that the map was developed in conjunction with meaning its not in house totally.

Firstly, I think we can all deduce from what Pete and others have said here is a Bowler remap is a branded version of a BAS one. If that's true - I'm very glad. No-one is in any doubt as to the expertise of BAS so if Bowler use, it all the better.

This means there are only TWO real specialists in the market (excluding generic chip companies). BAS who evidently supply Bowler; and ALIVE who I believe supply Urban Truck. I am not sure who supplies Twisted or SMC.

Anyway, from my perspective, I am still glad i went with Bowler because for the additional £300 notes they fitted it for me, provided a warranty (I will address separately) and given my vehicle the Bowler kudos. Sorry, but BAS stickers not quite the same.

Here is a summary of Stage 1 (170BHP) prices

Alive £495 +VAT (remap your existing ECU)
BAS £695 +VAT (supply a new ECU & app for self fit)
Bowler £1000 +VAT (supply a new ECU and fitting)

So if you go to Urban Truck, Twisted or SMC its worth knowing the underlying costs... 2015 110 XS CSW Montalcino Red with Black Pack

Alive is one I DO NOT supply 2.2 tuning too though I do supply twisted and others not mentioned here.

I must also add they my £695 offer for the new BAS2 tool that is shown is listed as an offer with FREE ecu and so,can not be compared to any other offerings seen by others as its on promotion with the nee remote tool.

A new ecu from the dealer parts counter is around £500

With regards to warranty I think if you have something in writing from Bowler or Urban Truck, then you have something to fall back on. Such a written statement prior to exchange of monies constitutes a 'contract'.

Below is exactly what Jon Chester (Brand Director) or Bowler said to me in writing prior to my remap on 13 July:

16 June 'We warrant all of the parts and services that we offer, and work with the LR dealer network to ensure that your level of warranty is unaffected."

19 June [Me] Are you saying the warranty you offer (and relations with LR) means my standard 3 year warranty is effectively left in tact? [Jon] Yes.

24 June "It's a small point, but we must be clear that the Bowler tune is not 'embraced' within the the standard LR warranty, as Bowler self warrant any work that we do, but we work with LR and the dealers to make sure that your overall warranty provision (and experience) remains the same and any issues are resolved in the correct way with minimum inconvenience to you as the customer"

Read what you want into this. Obviously, I am curious about Ryan at LR's response. However I've noticed in the past comments from Ryan at JLR tend to be very corporate/conservative stock answers. To be fair there is a legal risk to them in saying something that could then cause problems later on.

Anyway from my point of view I have a 'contract' with Bowler and this is legally enforceable at their expense. 2015 110 XS CSW Montalcino Red with Black Pack

Thanks for the reply Thumbs Up

I think quoting exactly what you have, clears up the situation nicely.

I think I have seen other posts were people have been told a slightly different story by main dealers, but I can put that down to poor communication or misunderstanding.

Personally, I would not be the slightest bit concerned about a re-map of a 120BHP unstressed Puma Tdci to 150 BHP or even 170 BHP or more.

For comparison, BMW use the same 2.0L diesel on the 118d and the 2.0d... it's simply an ECU remap that winds the BHP up 35 BHP between the two... and you can go to BMW tuners who map them well over 220 BHP and more with no issues.

I am certain that the tuners of Tdci Defenders have taken great care with the development of the re-map and those who choose to have them will have no negative issues at all, just a lot of positive gains! Thumbs Up YOLO... You Only Live Once...

This is exactly the stance taken by my dealer and Nurburg. If you buy one of Nurburg/UT specials all the non standard bits are covered by them, such as ECU,s exhausts Intercoolers, Bilstein shocks, momo steering wheels etc. Mine was supplied new with the map, by the dealer, supplying just 1 sales invoice. I had no involvement with Nurburg/UT. There is no need to 'Hide' anything come service time etc as they supplied it as is. Another annonomy discussed was wheels/spacers. So I was told, JLR will stand warranty claims as long as the rolling radius is the same as standard, irrespective of wheel offset, but put spacers on standard wheels and forget it Confused Reading peoples dealer experiences vary enormously, the same dealer can offer quite a conflicting experience ! My Td5 ran a Je engineering tune for 2 years and 20000 miles...... No mechanical issues. It has been heavily upgraded and Run Garry's alive tunes for the past 5 years and 65000 miles, again with no issues. Personally I am more concerned about the Anti corrosion warranty, and quality control, 66 years and still the same problems . Both Garry and Pete's workmanship is proven and second to none. Unfortunately only Time will tell should a warranty claim be necessary.

I also had the Bowler stage 1 upgrade as soon as i drove off from Hunters of Derby, also got them to put on the Bowler rear step bumper and steering guard with towing points. They can also provide an alternative and in my opinion good looking geer stick, in fact i dont think there is much they can't do. its a great place to visit and as someone else said on here it doesnt seem set up for the walk in customer as it is mainly a place for mechanical work, but all great guys in this family run business. I hadnt driven my defender enough before the upgrade to appreciate the difference frankly, but i am very pleased witht the way it drives, drove to devon a few weeks ago and had a very comfortable ride there and back despite the pooring rain.
I have a question about insurance, i bought my 110XS as a nearly new demomstrator and it came with black pack, premium leather seats, snorkel, bull bar, spot lights, light cluster protecters, alpine radio with subwoofer etc, i got it insured with a household name insurer and assumed that as i bought it with all the gear on they didnt constitute upgrades. I have just spoken with the insurer and they say that they specifically don't insure LR's with snorkels and bull bars, which seems odd...so i have to cancel the policy and now need to find a new one. Anyway can someone reccomend a good insurer for the defender with a few extras, ie they have an appetite for the business and get it, so to speak.
Thanks.

Ubishi28 give the NFU a shot at quoting for it - go via one of their regional offices rather than direct though.

I am guessing it was Direct Line that were allergic to your snorkel?!? Proud owner 110 Utility XS

Really interesting thread, I was going to get the bowler stage 2 map for my next 110 in the belief that it was "approved" by LR. They have managed to put a good spin on the facts which clearly seem to be that it is no more approved than running 26 inch wheels with a 5.0 LTR V8.

I have an alive remap interface box jobby from Gary. It came with 3 tunes with my 110 running the fastest since the day I got it. The defender now has 177 000 km on it and will do 100 mph with no problems what so ever with the engine. As some one else said all the quality issues are the parts and build quality by LR. The Ford engine seems to be rock solid.
