just my tpw - if JLR are only going to provide some bodge on bracket for the ends of the axle which in my opinion is a far more critical potential failure I wouldn't hold out much hope for something that could almost be deemed a consumable item.

that's not to say I don't agree with you it's just I wouldn't hold my breath so to speak.

I tend to agree with Caterham. We are all outraged because we've bought expensive products which have an unsatisfactory defect.

Landrover warrants the vehicle for three years and will replace the parts if they fail in that period. After three years, you're on your own. We feel that that is not acceptable, but Landrover could (and I am sure would) argue convincingly that it is very acceptable. After all, a few hundred failures after three years out af many thousands of vehicles is not really a big problem.

What you are asking is for Landrover to accept that the design is not fit for purpose and accept a massive and costly liability to replace potentially thousands of parts than haven't failed and may never fail. It simply isn't going to happen - not unless the courts force them to, and that isn't likely to happen.

I am not suggesting that LR is right, but the fact is that hell will freeze over before any liability is accepted.

Additionally, why draw the line at the output adaptor shaft? How many Pumas have had catastrophic failures of the front (two gear) diff? Quite a few, I'll wager. I know that I have had two halfshaft failures (which don't immobilise the vehicle) and a catastrophic diff failure which resulted in the almost complete loss of steering. Let's see if they'll replace all two-gear diffs while they're at it.

Once the liability door is opened, there is no limit, and that is why it will never be opened voluntarily.

All that is a given BW but nothing ventured is nothing gained. As an example back in 2007 a number of individuals on Land Rover forums who had bought early Puma's kicked up enough fuss with JLR about the lack of any anti corrosion wax protection that JLR arranged for said individuals to have their vehicles wax treated by their supplying dealers. Of course the manufacturer soon curtailed such activities but it does show that given enough ooomph on online media such as this can have its benefits. No sensible manufacturer with an eye to future business and return custom wants bad customer relations.

If everyone sits back and says there is no point then there will be no progress, all it takes is a bit of single minded drive [no pun intended] and a build up of momentum will follow.

Lack of lubrication on assembly of the splined shaft is a known issue - period. Steve.

I agree with what you say, MOG, I just doubt it will achieve anything. As you say though, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

LR are definitely better at customer engagement now than they were. We have a customer services rep on here, and they have got some good results over the years (missing XS steering wheels for one).

Yes the rep's has to follow company policy but it is good to have the official LR "factory" stance and support, rather than relying on the dealer when dealing with a problem.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I've a 2010 Puma and recently had the half shafts replaced as there was quite a bit of wear and back lash apparent. I thought I'd let a friend who I haven't seen or heard from for ages know that his vehicle (2007 model) may be suffering from the same thing and he advised his output shaft left him and his wife stranded in Western Australia but luckily he was at a roadhouse where he could get help but it still necessitated a trip on a flat bed truck to get it back to Perth for repair. Some 940 odd kays (580 miles or thereabouts) from memory.
A long expensive trip.
He's not mechanically minded at all so it's a waste of time talking grease etc with him, but when mine was changed during warranty the service foreman at the local stealers advised that "greasing was not on the service chart". Well of course it's not as there's no way you can do it in place but I begged with him to use a few cents worth while it was being reassembled and here's hoping they actually did. Sad
Must say it has much better gear changes now after the shaft change with out any slop which is just what it was like just after they did the warranty work.
Total disgrace that their workmanship etc. is so sloppy. But as bad as some parts of Pumas are a friend of mine who repairs LRs reckons that "as long as they make Discos and Rangies I'll never be out of a job!"
So I suppose I'll have to stick with the Deafener then.....

Back on the road now with the shaft and associated pieces replaced. Went through Landrover customer care and managed to get a contribution to repair costs (had to be repaired at the dealer though).

Fifth Horseman - it would probably be useful to others following this track if you could share the details of the financial contribution?

Was only a 50% contribution which at least made the cost of repair comparable with quotes from local indies.

my 110 double cabe is going in to landrover at the weekend for a gearbox strip down and inspect due to a disconserting "clonk" on gear change... probably another output shaft problem. thankfully i spotted it before it broke completely!

The chatter in neutral is unrelated to the adaptor shaft - its due to the springs in the clutch wearing, eventually it will sound as though there is a bag of spanners being shaken under the vehicle. If its only a light chatter I wouldn't worry about it yet.
If the adaptor shaft splines are worn it will introduce some slack in the transmission. The greatest problem is there is very little warning before they let go (I managed about 3 miles).
Not sure which garage I will use yet although will probably be one near Cambridge (very unlikely to be Marshalls due to their eye watering about rates).

Hi,

I actually DO have this slack in transmission on my 08 Puma and the characteristic clunking sound when shifting gears or driving off. Both prop shafts (UJs) seem to be ok but the front prop shaft can be turned by hand considerably. Equally with gear in neutral or in 1st gear. The rear prop shaft stays put and doesn't move at all.

So, will this most likely be the output shaft issue too? Why then doesn't the rear propshaft move too?

Thanks for any hints before I order the expensive Ashcroft set!

Oops, no the handbrake was applied. So, the rear prop shaft is moving about 1/8th rotation as well.

What does that mean?

Had a brief check up a few weeks back at Foley's garage in Livingstone and he also said that the car drives a bit 'clonky'. Since we were short on time he couldn't inspect it closer.

So, what, in your opinion, could be done? After all I use it for driving through the African bush and would not want to risk a major breakdown.

1.) 1/8th rotation play is normal.
2.) Have a look at the transfer box output shaft.
3.) check the diffs.

Anything else??
Since no reliable mechanics are around, I have to do this mostly by myself and with not very top notch tools.

Thanks in advance for any further leads,

Claus
