So in answer to the earlier question, I specifically bought a truck with no TC, when I fit the front lockers it will be with Ashcroft HD halfshafts and CV joints. I'll probably use the front locker once in a blue moon but at least I'll know that I can lock the whole drivetrain should I wish.

Surely though if you remove the relay for the TC (or fit a switch to turn it off/on), fit a rear locker only, then you're all set? What would be the issue with that set up?
What I dont understand is why you would need to engage your (normal) difflock in the set up above, since your rears would be turning at the same speed anyway, and those rears would maintain your momentum even if one front was spinning? another question - if you fit front and rear lockers, then surely you dont need to mess around with the TC at all in terms of removing the relay or turning your off switch because the wheels would constantly turn anyway? oh and why would you want to be turning corners if you did have both front and rear air lockers engaged? |

If you don't lock your CDL, the rear axle will not get any drive if any of the front wheels lose traction ![]() |

Gotcha.
So why not just have a rear locker and forget doing the front? Would that create any issues with the TC system? |

Apparently if you lock the CDL & RDL and still have TC, the front driveshafts take a pounding and may snap when you lose traction on the front wheels. |

I just had an email from Dave Ashcroft at Ashcroft Transmissions, and he says that if you have a rear locker only there is no issue re traction control at all.

Well, "the Yank" as you so graciously put it happens to be the head of the technical side of ARB, and since ARB lockers are not just fitted to Landrovers, but to many other vehicles both with traction control and without, I'm sure he knows a fair amount about it. I'd have also thought that the owner of Ashcroft transmissions might just know a thing or two about it. Is it at all possible that you broke whatever it was you broke using too much gas, doing something daft, or something you just should not have been doing?

How quickly does TC work?
If a wheel just has daylight under it, wheel spins, tyre hits ground. Does TC work that fast on first application to completely stop all wheel spin? Not talking about having 6' of daylight under tyre. If you have good grippy tyres and grippy ground, I could imagine a vehicle with TC breaking half shafts/diffs if you become slightly air borne as TC might not have time to respond quickly enough. TC on our D2 does appear to have a time lag. So what is the response time given for TC on Pumas? Brendan |
