Rear extra low bumper
Hi! As i live and Spain with special rules on modified vehicles I need advice / tip how to fab/mount an extra bumper below the stock rear bumper Sad It sux big time, (sure, as soon it has passed the MOT i can remove it, but still).

MAX distance from the ground to the underside of the bumper can only be 55cm (mine is 63cm). The inspector/engineer told me to bolt on a metal bar 10x4cm just under the original one (all because if someone hits me from behind).

This extra bar is but ugly and i wonder if you guys have any idea how to do this so it looks as good as it can,

I attached an illustration (in red) of how it must be mounted, each end must line up with center of tire.

The shape of stock bumper and the exhaust makes it even harder.

Guessing this is same kind of bar. Rear impact guard. I do see the point, but still.

How many ultra low sports cars in Spain?as these will be the only cars affected imo.......I cannot see where it could be attached to provide any serious collision protection!this is officialdom gone mad!

How about a standard front bumper and a couple of drop brackets fixing it to the rear cross member , have it a few inches behind and below the cross member, remove the tow hook and I would not worry about the exhaust if you are taking it back off after your MOT. Remove after MOT and refit tow hook (alternatively cut a section out of the standard bumper to allow for the tow hook and put a bend on the exhaust to point it out the side or down and leave the bumper on) . Wont be strong enough to achieve much other than appeasing your MOTer but aesthetically at least it could match the front and look OEM DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Would it be worthwhile having a quick chat with one or two other local 'MOT' inspectors/centres to see if they are pf the same opinion?


Our Defenders pass UK MOT's without issue where there is one minor area which is not safety related but could be a technical failure. However the MOT inspectors are Land Rover savvy and realise the foibles of Defenders. It is down to interpretation of the MOT guidelines.

So would a different Spanish 'MOT' inspector have a different interpretation of the guidelines?

Might be worth a few enquiries.

Have a few words with your local 4x4 club and on the Spanish Land Rover forum and find out what local experience is about this matter.

Would borrowing and fitting a set of wheels with 205 tyres bring your existing set up low enough ?

Well, this technician was at one of the largest club/garages this day, 4x4 Sahara in Marbella. He always does their vehicles . They always use this dude. What Censored me off is that even with stock shocks (i have 50mm lift) it would still be higher then 55cm from the ground.

The whole point is to get it registered with all stuff, and i mean ALL. Here you must register the Snorkel, suspension, bumperettes, wheels etc, all with part numbers etc. And I pay around 700Ģ for it aswell!

MOT(ITV in spain) is every 6 month here on this car so there is no way i can rebuild it two times a year.

I work with Harley-Davidson down here and you can only imagine what you CANīT do with the most modified bikes in the world haha.

I have heard the pain from my mate who now lives in Spain with his 110. Tyres that were 31x10.5x15" (wrong size, should be 235/85/r16), snorkel, towbar with no stamp on it, winch & winch bumper (not the correct one) chequer plate, roof rack spot lights, wrong spare wheel carrier (did not open with the rear door from inside), on board water tank. 1999 Defender TD5 110

yes, all true. as you can see on my green def on the picture above, the extra work light top right and all the lamp guards has to go as well. Sad
