Thank you for this post! I changed the oil in the gearboxes and diffs. With this post a pleasure Smile

I filled the Motul Gear Competition in the Transfer Box - wow, what a difference! Smooth and easy.

Cheers

Just stole half an hour to do my first engine oil change. Took about half an hour.

Then took about an hour to tidy up the oil dumped by the side of the road when I missed the drip pan Rolling Eyes

Things I learned: this'd be a lot easier with the landy up on ramps, and get something down on the ground first as your aim will be off. 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

Does one replace the entire sump engine oil plug after an oil change or only the washer? Wheer would one typically pick this part up? Landrover?

The Plug is readily available from LR or most factors for about 3GBP. There is a moulded in rubber sealing washer as apposed to a copper washer type seal. Thumbs Up

I didn't bother getting a new plug but wrapped a couple of turns of thread tape around the old one. Works well with no drips.

What's the torque on the Diff plugs?

" Fill the front axle assembly with the correct amount of the specified oil.
Install and tighten the drain plug to 60 Nm (44 lb.ft). Install and tighten the filler plug to 60 Nm (44 lb.ft)."

Taken from workshop manual. Thumbs Up

Are the diffs suppose to overflow when filled. I filled what I thought was 1.6l but it was not overflowing? Now I'm worried I underfilled...

The diff filler is also a "level plug" - so the oil should be at the level of the filler hole. Usually I gill till it's just starting to overflow, and then pit the filler/level plug back in Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I just did the transfer box oil. As per instruction I attempted to fill it to the filler plug level. I must have put in about 3.2 liters and it still didn't reach it...... My old Oil measured about 2.4 liters as per the said amount. Should I drain some out? Is the additional oil a problem?

Oh dear...... Seems i didn't use the right fill plug. There seems to be a hex bolt higher up. I used that one to fill.

Now that was a dammmmnn rookie mistake....... What's that top bolt there for?

I'm hoping that I can open the proper filling plug and the oil should drain out until the right level.

I know this may of been asked before but i cant seem to find anything on the subject matter...

There seemed to be a leak coming from the filler plug on my gearbox.. I have since changed the fluids but while i was taking the filler plug out oil started to come out... I refilled but accidentally put a bit much in and filled to the fill plug.. The leak is still there Sad

I'm not 100% sure if the leak is the gearbox weeping oil or if its the seals on the prop that have gone and flinging oil everywhere and up the side of the gearbox.. will have another look tonight and maybe try and siphon a bit of oil out of the gearbox.

With 2.2 litres in the gearbox whats the distance from the filler plug to the level of oil inside..?

Dont really want to have to drain as i had to run a tap through the drain plug hole as some swarf got stuck in the threads when i did it the first time.....

Regards

Hi Guys

Just a paranoid check if you don't mind.

I just ordered a Mahle filter kit from advanced factors and some oil from opie oils.

I just want to make sure I definately got all the correct oils - I believe so from reading through this thread:

I have a 57 2.4Tdci 90:

Engine Fuchs 5w30 Titan supersyn F eco-dt - 7litres
Rear Diff Castrol universal 75w90w - 1.7litres
Front Diff Castrol universal 75w90w - 1.7litres
Gearbox Castrol universal 75w90w - 2.2L

All sound ok?

Just to avoid doubt, a pic of the oil!

Thanks
