Martin. Where did the info come from re new casing for hd suspension?
Having a 110 csw I believe that means I have hd suspension? Here's hoping to a new casing and not a bracket? |

That looks more like the Swivel housing casting failing rather than the axle casing From what I can tell, you will only get a new axle casing if you have a 110/130 with heavy duty chassis which I would assume is CSW with Heavy Duty Chassis Option, Doublecab with Heavy Duty Chassis Option, USW, Hi-Cap or special Build in addition to all 130 as they are all Heavy Duty versions. Everyone else is most likely to get the bracket. Best way to find out is to ring your dealer ask them to check your vin to see if it has any outstanding recalls against it. Mine’s LHD, I’ve had the recall notice, PO48 bracket bodge.
The straw that’s broken the camel’s back, after nearly 50 years’ continuous Series/Defender ownership, I’ve lost interest in buying another. I no longer tow and LR quality, reliability and longevity have deteriorated to such an extent that the disadvantages and expense of ownership outweigh any advantages. I have to use my truck in January to ferry stuff to the South of France, then it’ll be advertised in LRO. Anybody wanna take over my five hundred quid lodged in October 2013 as “Deposit for LTD FDD Last Defender 2015" (whatever that might mean)? Peter |

Morning all,
Caterham, the only info I have seen is from the OP. Looking at the labour time allowance which is 0.2 hrs per side. Which is 12 minutes in the real world, we work on a 100 minute clock in the workshop. I can only assume it`s some kind of enclosure type affair, I would be very surprised if it enclosed the entire axle / swivel housing flange joint. For the time allowed, you could not drop off both steering tie rods, brakes / hoses, abs looms. and the drive shaft. And put it back together, but I don`t mind being proved wrong. As for heavy duty axles, I don`t have a clue I`ve got a 90, with a first axle weight of 1250 kg Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |

The bracket is evidently shaped a bit like a length of building guttering with a half flange on the end, since to fit it you remove the two radius rod to axle nuts, slip the bracket on, then refit the nuts. 12 minutes per side (the same time as the "drive in/out2 allowance).
I find it hard to see how the bracket helps, really, but I presum that it must have a small flange that comes up outside the axle tube to hub join flange and stops the bottom of the join opening up in the case of flange failure. Seem a bit of a bodge, to me! |

So it looks like the bracket is designed to support the weak weld & so stop it failing rather than stopping the failed weld from causing the stub axle to part company with the rest of the vehicle.

Possibly, but to do that there would have to be contact between the inner face of the outer flange of the half-collar and the outer face of the swivel hub mounting flange, and it would have to provide a calculated amount of preload on the joint. I seriously doubt that this is possible given the manufacturing and assembly tolerances involved, at least with any precision.
Personally I doubt that it can be relied upon to prevent a poor weld from cracking (and indeed the paperwork suggests that it is not intended to do so) however it will certainly stop the swivel hub from seperating from the vehicle, which is the most important thing. As a solution it addresses the issue which prompted the recall - the consequential loss of stability and directional control - rather than the root cause, a defective weld. Your axle will still (possibly) break, but you shouldn't crash. By the way, thanks for posting the photo, TJ101, interesting! |

I'm curious to what will be replaced. Will they replace the front diff and internals as well, or re-use the old casing internals?

I imagine that if there is evidence of a crack then just the tube will be replaced, and the pinion carrier (diff to you and me) will be swapped into the new case, and the complete swivel hub assemblies will similarly be swapped into the new case.
If there's no evidence of a crack you'll get the "engineered solution", ie the reinforcing brackets. If the end has broken off your axle completely and you've crashed, I imagine that you'll get a new axle plus other repairs or even possibly a new vehicle, depending on the extent of the damage. Remember though that there have only been 13 complete failures in the 3 years or so that LR has known about this problem. |

I got a letter this week as well. Judging by the dire consequences listed in the letter that this failure can cause, I'd be happier with a new axle casing but I'm sure Land Rover know best . I am certain that this "remedial action" chosen has nothing whatsoever to do with costs but is the best and safest option Land Rover could find. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
