We'll done that is an epic write up and epic rebuild.
I was expecting a few lines to say that Customs in Oz rejected the vehicle as looking brand new You should come back to blighty and set up shop ! I think you will have put some well respected garages to shame Do you what this has cost you to date in parts? Understand if you don't wish to reveal the figures but just wondered MY2015 110 Urban Truck Expedition Spec 2005 Td5 TwinCab 1998 110 CSW 300tdi |

Beautiful work, simply beautiful,...and professional+.
I've read the thread from the start, you are obviously a very cluey person, congratulations to you for the quality of your work, and also for having the "vision" for what it was that you wanted to achieve. Like another poster has said, "I wish you were my next door neighbour"! just onre thing, spending some time in Aus (the land of V8s!), did you think of fitting something like an LS3?!!!,...for sure maybe totally unsuitable for what you're going to use your lovely machine for, but jeez, it would've made a ripper road car? Whereabouts in Aus are you based?..We're in Melbourne. Well done, VERY well done in fact, Pickles. |

I am Marine Surveyor, I work at and in a varied selection of locations, from shipyards to offshore -oil rigs and construction vessels. It's different, but ultimately not what I really want to be doing with myself.
I'll PM you....
Thanks you very much Pickles. I am over in Perth. To be honest I didn't consider a V8 because of the extended traveling plan (V8 fuel economy...no!) and I know more than enough about the 300Tdi to hopefully keep it going in all conditions. I would however like to build a V8 90 over here...watch this space! Ok, on with the thread! So with me staying in Aus longer than I initially expected, it made sense to bring the Defender out here as well. Also, my dad was driving it in the UK and I couldn't let him have all the fun! So shipping was arranged (this actually took about 2 months to sort from Australia), I popped back to the UK again for three weeks to sort out all the details of getting the vehicle to the shippers. The truck was cleaned thoroughly inside and out, which included steam cleaning the underside. Trailer transport from Plymouth up to Southampton was sorted (man in a Transit Van with a Brian James trailer) and then the big day came: The Defender was well loaded up with tools, all my additional parts and spares and also a friends order of parts for his Defender as me shipping mine out and the use of container space was too good an opportunity to miss out on for him: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Pictured up on Plymouth Hoe before it was dropped of at the valet cleaners (he spent one and a half days on it!): Click image to enlarge I actually weighed the truck before I loaded it up and with a full tank of fuel it came in at around 2500kg, after everything had been packed it was up to 3000kg! Still, it sits nice and level even with the weight on-board and the handling was extremely good - Those Koni Heavy Track Raid Dampers are worth the cost. Post clean: Click image to enlarge All loaded up on the trailer after cleaning: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I did feel sorry for the Transit guy having to pull that amount of weight, he was defiantly flogging the guts out of his van on some of the hills along the A303! The weather on the drive up was absolutely shocking, luckily for me though the freight forwarding company had a jet wash at their warehouse that they didn't mind me using so it got another clean on arrival (Australian quarantine can be REALLY funny about vehicle imports). Here is it drying off: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge All lined up: Click image to enlarge In with room to spare, I could have taken more stuff Click image to enlarge Just in case they got excited at the other end: Click image to enlarge And this would be the last I would see of it for almost 7 weeks: Click image to enlarge More to follow! Brilliant story & Build Thread
Must be a fair few £'s in this vehicle now I've seen a few similar to this with Ford RS's on various sites & have owned a couple of cars that have been 'built' from the ground up.
I'm not surprised that it struggled that's way over it's maximum towing weight Lucky he wasn't stopped. Last edited by Xelr8 on 14th Oct 2014 12:00pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Agree re the transit.
My tri axle BJT trailer weighs 850kgs on its own. Add 3000kgs of 110 to that and you are asking for trouble! 2001 90 HT 6.0LS/6spdAuto. 2003 90 td5 soft top. 2014 90 XS SW 2.2. |
