If it were possible, who would like to have an indicator light which tells you when the DPF regen is taking place?

Fitting an indicator light to show DPF regen?
Given the potential for switching off mid regen and the associated problems this causes, I was wondering if it would be possible to fit a LED into the dash showing when the process has started or is occurring? If it is possible where would I take off the signal for the LED?

I dont have a wiring diagram to see where to take off the LED from. It cant be that difficult. At least you could continue the regen until its finished. Thinking about it, the light would need to be on throughout regen so you know how long to continue.

I would be keen to do this mod too, I do a lot of short trips so if it starts "regenning" I can see to carry on driving a little while longer to allow it to finish. 110 Hardtop

Yes, I would like this LED too.

Yesterday my dpf-regeneration startet and the boost pressure (scangaugeII) dropped to 0,2bar at 2400rpm on 4th gear and -0,7 bar on idle. It took 20km on the Autobahn to finish the reg = the boost pressure raises to normal.

A LED indicator would be very helpful as it ist much easier to check than the boost pressure reading.

Cheers

Is there any way other than a light to tell if it's on a regen? Noise or smell maybe?

Too many noises in a Defender! Too many smells sometimes too! A light is what we need. Mr Bell must have an answer?

I used to be able to tell that my BMW 535D was doing a regen, but I have never noticed the Defender doing it until getting out and hearing the exhaust ticking (and then burning my hand on it). Did once feel the heat coming through the footwell on a long journey. Whilst in some ways it would be good to know, in other ways it's great that you don't have to.

The Defender does seem quite capable of keeping the DPF clean, by frequent active regens at low speeds. Quite unlike a lot of mainstream cars, but probably at the expense of fuel economy.

There is always the amber DPF warning light on the dash if the regen cycle has not been successfully completed and the vehicle needs to be driven until it does Thumbs Up

The standard light indicates that the filter is almost full, not that 1 regen has not completed.
I don't know how many attempted regens can happen before the standard light would come on.
The point of this indicator being discussed would be if the light comes on - keep driving till it goes off.
The idea being that incomplete regens contaminate the oil with diesel.

I spent half an hour last night going through the code, looking to see if there was a simple switch that could be set to allow a visible warning that regen was taking place. There are regen abort procedures within the code for when the engine is shutdown, so its all taken care of. There are a couple of areas of interest, that I'll do some tests on (when I get time!) to see if this could be done.
