Towing with Defender 2.2 TDCI
Hi everyone, can anyone advise me on real world fuel consumption (mpg) and pulling power for a Defender 2.2 TDCI towing a small touring caravan. Thanks a lot, Rob.

Mine seems to do 26mpg.

I have been towing three tonne today and pull it fine. Hill starts are slow and brakes aren't the best. Keep your speed at 60 or less and it's a very good tower.

110 tows better than a 90. The extra weight and length of the 110 means it will tow upto the 3.5 tonne limit with no problems.

not so sure about the 110 being better at towing than a 90
1, 110 is heavier already
2 , tow ball is further away from back axle , closer is better

I think it depends what your towing. I have always found that if towing a caravan then a 110 seems to give a more comfortable ride, however trailers seem better with a 90. Well to me anyhow!

I've owned and towed with a fair few of both and found that the less choppy ride of a 110 equals less pitch and bounce at the hitch - but there's not much in it. Real world towing I found there is less engine braking with the 2.2 so you have to use the brakes and gearbox a bit more. For me unless it is outrageous and there is obviously a problem fuel consumption never really enters into the equation, I just don't run a Defender on the basis of economy. Steve.

If your towing a light load say under 2 tonne the 90 is just as good. But when you get closer to the 3.5 tonne the extra weight and harder rear springs really make for more stable towing.
