Semi Synthetic 15/40's engine oil in gearbox
Hi guys

Again got talking to a wagon driver at work yesterday about landies as he owns a 300tdi disco and got talking about my gearbox just starting to crunch in gear when going into secon'd gear and i know his gearbox is different to mine but he said he runs his gearbox on 15/40's semi synthetic engine oil and just wondered if I can run my gearbox on the same oil

if you put a bit thicker oil which engine oil would be it will be a real pig to get 2nd gear when cold ,
think yours would use atf in the box , I would try one of the modern thin gear oils , mtf94 maybe

Use MTF94.

The Haynes book of suggestions advise ATF but as I found out it runs too hot and boils in the box.

Land Rover found that out too and worked with oil companies to make MTF94 (or so I'm told) and from about 1990 onwards only used MTF94 in there boxes.

The crunching is going into second is due to warn syncromesh gears which is common for your box.

Changing to MTF94 will improve it, take your time with gear shifts to allow the syncro to work will help. Unfortunately it will only ultimately be cured by a gearbox change/rebuild.

Give opieoils - site sponsor a ring they will probably have it on the shelf and give you a forum discount.

Last batch I got was from ebay, think its was £9 a litre. From memory needed 4 litres as you always spill some and then you have some spare for topping up Thumbs Up
