HELP PLEASE! Prop shaft, clunk, play
the 110 has recently been clunking A LOT and it seems to be getting worse. Used to just be on bad gear changes but happens a lot more now.

Got under the car (wheels on the ground, so no turning them) and felt the front prop shaft. It spins a lot(80-90 degrees?) (not play in the UJs, but the shaft actually turning in both the the diff end and the transfer box end.

I've attached a video of the prop shaft and the noise that i get when driving around:

What could be the problem? The rear has only a few degrees of play which seems fine but the front is really very bad it seems.

Thanks in advance guys Cheers, David

Had similar concerns with mine, lots of propshaft play and a sinister clunk on gear changes, especially under load. Anyway ended up being a broken front diff. Replaced the diff with a Detroit truetrac and it drives like new again.
All the best with diagnosing your problem. Sometimes It is better to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission.

Bad news I think mate, looks like a knackered diff to me, speak to Ashcroft, loads of threads on here re front diff woes, don't drive it more than you need to, if it fails it could cause an accident and/or more damage!!
have you got a warranty?

Also were you not about to do a service, the oil coming out will probably contain evidence of failure DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Hi all,
Can you advise if the diff etc. from a MY04 TD5 is the same as I have the same symptoms as David. Its got 53K on the clock and fine when cold but as soon as its up to temperature exhibits a real clunk when taking up drive etc.
With the wheels on the ground I am able to turn the front prop just like the one shown in the video while the rear has vitrually no movement to speak of.
Cheers

Make sure the hand brake is off before checking the rear..
But don't get under it unless fully secured first.

Yep, diff it appears to be Big Cry

Spoke to a Land Rover mechanic 'off the record' and he says the same - fit a HD one. Will speak to ashcrofts and see what their advice is too.

Is it a DIYable job? Doesn't seem to complicated to remove half shafts, props and the open up the pinion casing?

Also it seems to be affecting steering a little now, that would all agree with diff right? Feels as if it's torque steering the wrong way around corners a little. Will take it slow! Cheers, David

Obviously undo handbrake but secure the car somehow, my front prop turns as shown in video but the rear is fine (maybe 2/3 degrees of play but seems fine. Cheers, David

It's a 2010 ('10 plate)

Can you briefly explain the difference? How do I tell which I have? Cheers, David

Yes David it is very do-able for the home mechanic.

1. Prop off
2. Support vehicle with front wheels off the floor and remove them.
3. Remove rear steering drag bar.
4. Remove Filler bung, Drain oil.
5. I remove the swivel cups from the axle (easiest way) Pull them out so the shafts disengage from the diff.
6. Undo all the diff to axle casing nuts and remove. It is heavy so be careful.

Easily done within a day.

Goodluck

What can be considered as normal play of the front and the rear propshafts? I just checked mine, and both the front and the rear I can turn by hand just about 1 cm or 1/3 of an inch.... I presume that is entirely normal, yes?

Asking because I have had a a clunk when changing gears up too, which according to dealer was due to play in halfshafts which were subsequently replaced. When the truck is cold there is not the slightest clunk anymore now, but when it has warmed up, and when I change gears up with a bit of pressure on the accelerator, there still is a slight clunk. Nothing much, but just wondering if this is just due to that little play in the propshafts?
