Because I'm the installer haha!

And didn't fancy them being forced on by the engine and me not being able to turn them off (as the police car needed to do in the above example!)

Does such a relay exist? Cheers, David

Wire them in as they should be and maybe put a switch in so you have auto on (as they should be) or off. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yeah I did briefly try that but the auto on unit doesn't work with a 12v feed from the switch. It needs a straight feed from the battery which would require a lot of effort and wouldn't be protected by a fuse etc

May just live with switching them off/on when I need them!

Ideally there would be a simple 'LED dim' relay... Cheers, David

On page 73 you can read this...

6.19.7.1. The daytime running lamps shall be switched ON automatically when the device
which starts and/or stops the engine is in a position which makes it possible for
the engine to operate. However, daytime running lamps may remain OFF while
the automatic transmission control is in the park or neutral position, while the
parking brake is applied or after the propulsion system is activated but the vehicle
was not set in motion for the first time.
The daytime running lamps shall switch OFF automatically when the front fog
lamps or headlamps are switched ON, except when the latter are used to give
intermittent luminous warnings at short intervals.

In a nutshell, they have to come on and switch off automatically as above, not manually via a button.

Mine are wired to come on with the contact on, go off automatically once turning the parking lights or low or high beam on. But they remain illuminated when without any lights turned on I give a high beam warning signal. That is the correct way, including for Switzerland where our MOT equivalent took the pleasure verifying if the installation was correct. And it was indeed. Thumbs Up

GUM, I am by no means keen on this kind of legalistic documents, but sometimes they come in handy. So for those having questions or doubts, here is the fully Monty of the EU lights regulations, I believe this revision 6 is the up to datest version. Re DRLs look on pages 72 and 73.

It's annoying all the DRL controllers you find use a voltage sensor to trigger the on/off by sensing the alternator voltage or batt voltage (~13.5V vs ~12v) but I don't want that..

The voltage sensors don't work with a 12v ignition feed, they need straight from the battery which I don't have a feed at the front for. Therefore they won't ever come on, sensing only ever 12v

Ideally need to find just a relay that dims an LED when a feed triggers it, but never seen such a simple one. Cheers, David

Why not wire correctly to the battery positive through a fuse and then switch the earth for manual off control

David, from your initial post you said you had another wire you did not use, I would guess this needs to be connected to the side lights and the unit will dim the lights. You could then switch the positive allows you to have them on or not.

Yeah it's really good Killer, cheers. The bumper has fewer mud traps than the factory one too! Smile

And GEllis it came with a voltage sensor as are easily available on eBay, but I don't like them. They often don't seem to work and they don't work with a 12v ignition feed but only a direct battery feed. I could've used this as it also incorporated a 'turn off with the sidelights' function but as I've said I don't want to have to rewire my wiring and switch to use the battery

Again, ideally I just want a relay to dim my LEDs with the sidelight feed (no auto on/voltage sensor function) Cheers, David
