Caterham, Don,t know about puma gearbox but 1/2" O/D clear plastic hose fits nicely into filler hole one an R380 box this has an internal diameter of 10mm i use a stainless steel funnel purchased from a cookware shop this has a slightly tapered neck that ensures a nice tight fit in the hose.
Will try and get a picture when i,m off tomorrow. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Cook and I both think the thing sounds quieter since I changed all the oils underneath. Gear changes are a little easier as well although they were pretty good before anyway.
I'm a bit of an oil fanatic and am now quite happy with what I've put in the diffs and g/boxes and can sleep soundly at night. Thumbs Up

Just in the middle of my year 4 service and was wondering if the drain and fill plugs on the differentials and gearboxes require Hylomar or some other thread sealant?

On the diffs and T/Box I used a single layer of thread tape as they are a tapered thread but the G/Box had straight cut threads and no gasket of any kind, and were rammed in hard and took some effort to crack open. When refitting I used Permatex gasket non hardening sealant which has always done a good job in the past on drain plugs.
Cheers.

^^ good link, superspoons...

He used the "Laser Multi Purpose Mini Pump" (£17.99 from machine mart) oil pump for the gearbox. I tried that on the R380 box...it took absolutely AGES, but I gave up and bought the garden sprayer, and used the hook & pipe off the Laser Multi Purpose Mini Pump... If you have a compressor, you may be able to modify the laser pump to speed up the process.
Interestingly he seemed to fill it, rather than measure out the correct amount... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I bought one of these and did both gearbox and transfer box this afternoon. Great bit if kit .. if not a little expensive.

Planning to change the gearbox oil (first time ever) and replace with Motul Gear 300, will post feedback once done and running. --

Right, so the gearbox now has Motul 300 in it.

First impressions after the 25km drive back home: there is definitely an improvement in the gear changes. Much less notchy, esp when cold and less clanging as well.

Switched to Fuchs Titan SuperSyn F 5w30

After the first oil change to the Fuchs, my indie recommended that I change the oil again after 2000km to flush out any remaining Castrol.

Engine is running very well Smile

Thumbs Up --

Naks - have you had the spacer bushes done as per this thread:

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic24561....n+bulletin

I'm planning a 2nd gearbox oil change soon, but was going to get the dealer (I'm still under warranty) to install the spacer bushes first... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Thanks to everyone whom has contributed to this thread, I followed the guide today and changed the oil in both axles, the gear box, transfer box and engine. Purchased an £8 garden sprayer from "the range" for filling up the gearbox (didnt need to add a hooked pipe on the end as I managed to get the spray wand to wedge under the car and into the filler hole). Used Gulf Competition Gear Oil from site sponsor Opie in everything except the engine. Used Castrol for the engine purchased when Halfords last had an offer on. All went well and took about 1.5 hrs all in. PS my Gearbox was T50 sized filler and drain plugs.

All future servicing will now be done by myself. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

I'm feeling the same, seems pointless to pay & get the extra piece of mind. Also gives you a chance to get that bit more 'intimate' lol Thumbs Up Cheers, David
