Heard today from guy salmon. In a nutshell theyre still not sure.
Theyre going to replace a section of fuel line where i had put in a primer bulb, incase its drawing air and now adding to the problem (im fairly sure it isnt but they want to be sure) and then theyre going to try priming/bleeding system and seeing whether that helps. if not itll be flush tank & lines and if that doesnt help, then its a complete mystery! very frustrating! (im off greenlaning with the NWLRC next weekend) Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Sort of.
Been in guy salmon since Friday, and they've replaced a suspect section of fuel line (no help) and yesterday eve / today removed, checked and cleaned out the tank. They reckon the pipe (for lack of a better word?) which takes fuel out of the tank had a blocked end, restricting fuel flow. (Think there's some sort of nozzle/gauze/filter on the end of said 'pipe'? They're going to refit tank and test again. Fingers crossed! EDIT: hope it's sorted soon, I'm out on my first NWLRC outing this weekend! (Hopefully!) Jeez, car is STILL in the garage. Seems like everything has gone wrong! Fickle modern Diesel engines!
Whatever happened to hard as nails old Diesel engines which regularly ran on part petrol fuel, and chewed up water and grime contaminants for breakfast? To me common rails seem like a massive step back... Anyway, new fuel pump req'd - £1k down the drain (didn't go through warranty...) Been on the phone to warranty company and LR themselves, so may get some back. A titchy bit of sediment in fuel, mostly stopped in filter and pump (probably, could be injectors I suppose) is destroyed - ridiculous. You could have always got a 300tdi if you wanted an old diesel. Common rails are what common rails are, for most people the beneifts outweight the issues.

I know
Just frustrating when it all goes wrong! It is tempting to start a fresh with a 300tdi rebuilt, galv chassis, auto box, recon drivetrain etc and loads of sound insulation.. If only I had the time & money! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

I'm guessing that they are pointing to the small print in the policy? What are they actually saying? |

Basically:
Guy salmon aren't sure whether it is the pump or injectors which have failed. So they want to change the pump first (most likely cause) and see if that solves the problem. The warranty company rejected it on the basis that 'there was evidence that fuel had been contaminated' (tank had been flushed, lines replaced etc, filter changed) Our argument was: how can you say that fuel contamination has caused the failure of the pump, when we are not sure it's even the pump that has failed? They are outright blanket not covering the fault because there had been evidence of fuel contamination (note that none of the stuff done to remove contamination which was suspected made any difference to anything, so there wasn't even really a contamination issue) So we can't even be sure the thing they are saying failed because of contamination has failed, or even that it was because of the fuel in it. Hope that makes sense? Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Hardly makes sense but I understand.
Hope you battle this one out with them, as I hate it when people employ flawed logic and in an attempt to wear you down and fob you off. |

I know, everyone seems to want to make money by confusing, scamming and ripping off consumers rather than through good service and products.
Didn't mind the clutch, because they are genuinely a 'wear' part which take a lot of punishment. However the high pressure fuel pump shouldn't fail, and of any crap got through to it then surely that means that the filter wasn't doing it's job or some other part. I,m sure a local diesel injection specialist could test the injectors to either confirm or rule out that they are the problem. If they are the the problem they can be rebuilt.
Come to think of it they could probably test the pump as well ! 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |

Defender was collected today, running beautifully after the fuel pump arrived and was replaced. Guy salmon also replaced the filter, fuel line and cleaned the tank at their own cost so RESULT.
Can't wait to get back on the road with it (and off it!) Cost £900 total for all the stuff and trying to get stingey, awkward, avoiding warranty company to pay out! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |
