Good news. Can't help but feel you're being a little harsh on the warranty company. You did by your own admission put diesel full of crap into it, which may or may not have caused the pump to fail but you've got to admit the timing is a little suspect.

Yeah dead relieved.

Maybe I am, but it's the vague way they say / do everything and the lack of logic they insist on using when solving/remeding the problem

Example: they insist on having tank, lines, filter cleaned or replaced (luckily at GS cost because they agreed with us) even though the car ran badly on a direct feel of fuel from a can into the high pressure pump. They also sent an engineer out who concluded that either the pump or injectors are damaged - not sure which, but said that whichever it was must have failed because of fuel contamination, since there was 'evidence of contamination'.

No idea what 'evidence of contamination' - we asked if they had taken a sample of fuel, they said they had taken 2-3 pints and that it was obviously contaminated? The tank had been drained and all that was in it was a second consecutive tank of brand new supermarket fuel so not sure about that.

They also said that whichever it was - pump or injectors - that had failed, they wouldn't cover it because either of them could have been caused by contamination. Maybe it's just me but I'd expect them to want to see which part had failed and determine why.

The failure could have been unrelated but since I had replaced filters etc as an early precaution they just jump on that bandwagon and deny warranty without further inspection.

As a logical practical person I'd want to know why and for sure what had gone wrong... Cheers, David

Unfortunately logic doesn't always come in to the equation with warranty. The inspection came to a halt immediately after finding parts had been replaced. I suspect that if the car had been taken with no self diagnosis/ replacement of parts then you would probably had a good assessment and greater chance of a successful claim.

You could relate to a scenario of returning an electrical item that stopped working but before you returned it, you chopped off the plug and fitted a replacement in an attempt to repair. Not many retailers would accept your claim.

David,
Where did you source the steering guard from, it looks quite substantial?

It came from eBay second hand I'm afraid, and has no branding on.

It's aluminium and pretty thick, held on by 2 separate brackets which were easy to fit.

Cost me £60/70 if I remember correctly

But a quick ebay search revealed this - http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?...0673744042 - which looks a very similar one (could be same manufacturer but I'm not sure) Cheers, David

Further thought-

That ebay one doesn't have tow rings so can't be the same one, but a google (John craddocks are good) or ebay search will reveal a number of options, I'd reccomend aluminium as they are rust prone obviously. Make sure aluminium brackets and stainless bolts too Cheers, David

What are you getting? New I guess?

And some advice I kinda learned the hard way - get the best one you can afford first time, whatever it is.

This is my second set of DRLs and the LED fog lights are condensing up so will need replacing sometime, it's cheaper just to get good ones first time round or wait til you can Smile Cheers, David

You sure you have aluminium brackets? Just never heard of one with that before.

Hmm I think so,

They're certainly not mild steel and they don't look like stainless.. But could be another alloy I guess? Or slightly worn/pitted stainless...

Either way, avoid mild steel or powder coated IMO Cheers, David

They're typically mild steel and some are galvanised, which could be what you're seeing. Aluminium isn't strong enough (in a sensible thickness) to be used for the brackets.

I'd also be very wary of stainless bolts for this application. Unless you choose some very expensive 12.9 ones, then they're too brittle for structural use. Again, typically they're 8.8 steel, which is perfectly adequate if protected properly. Darren
