For months now I have had terrible back lash and drive problems . All the same symptoms as reported . My dealer took the gearbox out and confirmed splines on this shaft very worn along with other worn parts . New transfer box required and this was 2 wks ago . There are NO transfer boxes in stock at the factory and there is a back order for over 18 vehicles parts . Arrrrrrgh ? I had planned an overland trip to Tbilisi Georgia , leaving this Sunday , guess I'm flying then ? My 110 sits at the dealer as I go away for 6wks with no date known when new gearboxes will arrive . What's new then ?

I have new crated Puma transfer cases in stock,

call me on monday if you want one,

Same thing happened to my 2011 110 a couple months ago... Only 14k gentle miles. Luckily it failed in the hands of an engineer from Land Rover who had been sent to my house on recommendation of my dealer who didn't want me to risk the drive in. Poor chap from LR didn't make it beyond end of my driveway before total failure.

LR were brilliant, couldn't have handled it better.

4pm - I call dealer to discuss concerns about transmission
6pm - Engineer from LR (not dealer) arrives at house
6:30pm - Gearbox failure
11:30pm - Loan car (new Freelander HSE) delivered to house
8:00am - AA truck arrives and winches Defender onboard

Shame the product was not built properly in the first place...but cannot fault the way LR handled it to be honest.

I think the Ford Transit has about the same weight as a Defender.
There is one model with the same 2.2TDCi which weighs 2140kg and has a load capac. of 860kg. But I think this model is a bus,
When I see Transits they are driven like they were stolen by underpaid and overworked parcel service drivers.
Itīs astonishing (to me) that a gearbox shaft should work there but not in a Defender.

OTOH the late Volkswagen Polo of my wife had screws in the wheel well on which I could see the zinc plating even after the 5 years of daily commuting. When I took very new zinc plated screws and put them somewhere on my RRC they were rusty after as much as only one year. So I conlcude that the LR products must be under a kind of curse. Parts that withstand every usage thrown at them will fail if attached to the Defender ?

Yes but transits don't have a transfer box and hence no requirement for the main [to transfer box] intermediate shaft. Steve.

When this problem occurs what parts need replacing and is it just remove the transfer box fit parts and replace transferbox?

Are the parts

TUD500020 Shaft
LR030054 Collar/Flange

I see the LR030054 was a new version introduced after BA555554 chassis numbers so maybe LR believe this is the faulty part?

I was told by the stealer that there's no requirement for that shaft to be greased. I'm not impressed with that as a couple of cents worth of grease can't do any harm.

Mine went a couple of days ago, July '12 car with 16,000 very carefully driven miles on it. The garage called today to say I can pick it up tomorrow, it's had a clunk in the transmission from new so fingers crossed that might be better now too! Loan car has been a Disco HSE Luxury; nice car but far too many knobs and buttons in it - can't wait to get the Defender back!

Cheers! Thumbs Up

Put transfer case back in seems ive still got that first gear whine
Although might have found a loose nut on the front output shaft which may have been causeing a vibration at 75 k/m ph
The guys might have not tightened to correct tension
Will pull out front shaft and check tension
Good help hard to find

Pleased to say the gearbox is so much better now with the new shaft fitted, and having also had the transfer box front output seal replaced earlier in the month it is now 'leak and clunk free' - amazing!

Thumbs Up

Me too!

started with a big clunk then got worse over 3 or 4 miles before failing near my parent's house. The 2 hour wait for assistance was not too onerous - got a nice lunch!

The gearbox end splines are a) too fine and b) sometimes not greased enough at assemby. The Tech who fixed mine assured me it was now properly greased.

MY2012 110XS with 19k miles.

Other than that my 110 gets driven hard, never washed, regularly running off road (I have a smallholding) and frequently tows 3t plus. So far I've had a leak at the bulkhead, a wee bit of rust (literally a spot) fixed due to bad assembly (it was a weld that was not flattened before painting) and that's it.

Having had a couple of freelanders as courtesy cars I now want my nex car to be a Defender with a Disco interior and gadgets - heated steering wheel mmmmmmmmm

My 130 started to whine and had loads of slack in the drivetrain...... took it into one dealer and they replaced a swivel seal under extended warranty. Said the rest was fine. I took it for another opinion.

Took it to a dealer who knows Defenders and more importantly understands the issues. Call today to say they are replacing output shaft, transfer box, new rear diff, all half shafts. They are also fixing the water leak, fitting a new front bumper and painting the windscreen surround and both bulkhead brackets.

While they have the box out, I am wondering if I should ask for the clutch to be done? 39k miles.
