what about the new first time tax they are introducing next year?
will a small co2 reduction help significantly?

Well at the moment you would pay £750 first year on the 2.4 (non utility/commercial)

I didn't realise that.

anyway speaking to someone else today within LR and they had also heard a comment about the 2.2 replacing the 2.4. seems to make a huge amount of sense to me. I suspect only a very small drop in performance (possibly none) but I have no doubt there could be a small reduction in co2 which I presume would drop the defender out of the £400+ / year road tax and into £215 ! now to me that would be a real bonus.

I just need to know when this is going to happen Bow down

Tried the 2.2 in the Freelander and that is definitely a better engine than the 2.4. It goes like a bomb! Boldly going nowhere

you are wrong!!! Twisted Evil Embarassed

see the engine structure, e.g. puma have 6 head studs each cylinder, PSA engine (freelander) only 4, puma have plasma piston coating, PSA not, .......

puma is "oversized" internal parts engine designed, PSA is "optimized" (means tiny parts)

LR downgrade the injectors from piezo to solenoid for use low quality diesel (try new transit with same engine with piezo injectors)....

try to drive with tow on sand for 3 or 4 hours with freelander.......

PSA is a "street" oriented engine, Puma is heavy duty oriented engine....

Puma is fully military spec engine, PSA not (TD5 engine NOT also) Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Well, very nice engine to drive all the same. I leave the technical stuff to the technical guys. I'm just the guy with the hands and the feet. Mr. Green Boldly going nowhere

Defender won't be getting the DW12 PSA engine (2.2 Freelander unit) - it'll be getting a 2.2 litre variant of the Ford Puma.

Since I got stranded in the sand with my Defender, I don´t go even near it.
At least with mud one stands a chance, but with sand? Forget it! Boldly going nowhere

Martin,

2.2 and 2.4 are the SAME engine!!!! The only difference is the stroke of 2.2 (little bit short)

- 2.2L TDCi: bore diameter of 86.0 mm and a 94.6 mm long stroke crankshaft.

- 2.4L TDCi: bore diameter of 89.9 mm and a 94.6 mm long stroke crankshaft.

So, I'm not realize that this downgrade will bring a lot of CO2 emission reduction (remember, it's car weight depending also), but never say never..... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

New Duratorq Diesel Engines

The two Duratorq TDCi common-rail diesel engines share the following common elements:

Cylinder head with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder
Maintenance-free simplex timing chain drive
Charge-air cooling (intercooling)
Water-cooled and electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation (e-EGR)
Turbocharger with fixed turbine geometry for the low-power versions (2.2-litre 85/110PS and 2.4-litre 100/115PS)
Turbocharger with variable turbine geometry for the high-power versions (2.2-litre 130PS and 2.4-litre 140PS)
Weight-reduced cast-iron cylinder block (6 kg less) with optimized geometry and wall thickness for high stiffness and lower deflection of airborne noise
Ladder frame design for extremely stiff layout of the engine's connection between oil pan and clutch housing
Six cylinder head bolts per cylinder for highly uniform clamping of the cylinder head gasket as well as reduced deflection of bores
Minimised water jacket volume contributing to optimised engine warm-up
Direct assembly of ancillaries to cylinder block/ladder frame to reduce weight and radiated noise levels
Both engines feature common rail injection systems. Thanks to this proven system and to the engine's very modern layout with four valves per cylinder and centralized injector, the new Duratorq TDCi engines solidly meet Stage IV emission limits that demand a 50 per cent reduction in oxides of nitrogen and a 40 per cent reduction in particulates from the outgoing Stage III levels as well as a 12,000 miles increase to 60,000 miles for system performance requirements.
