Installing a aux power socket in the rear
Have read several posts about a permanent powered purple and black wire behind one of the rear speaker panels. For us continental Left Hand Drivers that would be on the passenger side. Have checked it, and yes it is there, a black wire and a purple wire ending in a double spade plug, but otherwise unused. These wires are protected by the same 20A fuse of the towing socket. I can assure you about that, because I blew it today and had to replace the fuse. Mr. Green
As our Defenders come standard with only one interior power socket, on the center dash, I thought it would be good to use these unused permanent powered wires for a 2nd power socket. I ordered one from Mud-UK, and installed it today.
Very easy mod, but quite useful to power up a electric coolbox in the back or other.
Here some pictures about what I did today.

Dismantling the rear panels reveals the little loom in question

Drill a hole in the panel just big enough to push the socket through. I drilled several smaller holes, then used a sharp cutter, and finished it off with a circular file to get the hole just perfect for a tight fit.

Made a little extension to the wires as the wires spade connector is no direct fit to the socket connector

Connecting it all up. Mind, you will notice that on one of the Mud socket connectors is a tiny + showing.

The purple wire is the + and I connected that properly to the Mud + connector via my red extension wire. The blue extension goes between the black wire of the loom which is the - and the unmarked connector of the Mud socket

Last thing I did was replace the 20A fuse which I blew in the process, but have no pics of that Whistle You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

The only recommendation I'd make is that the extension bit you've used is fine but I'd use fully insulated female crimp terminals to the the rear of the socket like these:

Just because the live is a little exposed and could cause a short if anything comes into contact with it and the body.

Couldn't agree more with that Steve. I will replace those asap by fully insulated, but when I started this little job this morning and found that I ran out of the needed crimp terminals I had only one chance on this Ascension thursday when everything is closed, and that was a French supermarket which was open this morning Mr. Green . Will get that corrected before the week is over as stores are open tmrw again Thumbs Up . You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

You had the same issue as me then of running out over the Bank Holiday weekend. Thumbs Up Didn't mean to intentionally criticise just though it's better to be safe than sorry. This is a useful mod that is relevant to TD5's (and probably 300tdi's) too. It's worth noting though that the spare wires have been deleted on 13MY vehicles. Very short sighted of Land Rover IMHO. Darren

Same wires can be found on a Hicap they are just left dangling under the back of the rear crossmember.

Saw this week that on a model year 2013 Puma 2.2 station wagon that there are two wires ending in a plug dangling out 10 cm or so from the right hand side chassis rail somewhere 20 cm or so before the rear crossmember. Saw it at a friends new Defender while we were at the dealer. When asked about what these cable are for, they just did not know. Could it be that after the purple and black live wires behind the right hand side rear speaker panel were abandoned on model year 2013, that those wires/plug dangling out of the chassis rail are the new live wires which could eventually be used for a rear work light or other? A rear work light remains an option, so the juice must be taken somewhere, yes? Any 2013 model year drivers able to shed light on this?
