2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
DIY - Oil Catch Tank
I fit a oil catch can in the engine vane to help separate oil and sludge from the gas flow coming from the engine breathing system.
This mod can help in keeping clean the turbo, intercooler and related hose.

I bought a cheap alluminium Universal Oil catch tank from eBay like this one:


Then I drilled the inlets to fit a larger alluminium pipe where to plug the stock black rubber hose. The new inlets was welded to the head of the catch can.

A separator was also welded inside the head of the catch can to help the separation between oil/sludge and gas flow.

The catch can was then fixed with two quick release hose clamp to a factory installed bracket on the wing, near the turbo heat shield.


The stock hose p/n LLN500030 connect the engine head to the catch can inlet. The connection between the catch can outlet and the duct-air is made by using a second LLN500030 hose (price 4.5 euro) + a 90 degree manifold.

About the effectiveness, the next 2 pics show some oil drops and sludge collected after a very short 300km trip. I will recheck after a few thousand km.

The filter can be further improved by adding some kind of steel wool on the inside, just be sure it does not release harmful debris that can be flowed outside the filter and hit the turbo fins.

Copying your idea:

Bit more expensive than yours but the 25mm connectors may fit the existing hoses. Yes - I am lazy Laughing

Judging by all the slimy oil in the pipework, this mod might be kinder to the MAF :thumbsup:

Mine was too big so sent it back Rolling Eyes

Ordered another from UK (cheaper too) which should be better:


I'm going to get some 14mm (internal) tubing with a 3mm wall just to thicken the connections for the 20mm (internal) oil pipe.
Fingers crossed...

The above is the same as mine. You can cut two slice of the blue transparent rubber hose and put over the inlet and outlet to enlarge the diameter and allow the stock hose to be fitted.

IMO outlets should be as close to stock pipe as possible i.e. as big as possible - to not increase resistance in pipe for gases. Puma 110

Funny how I ended up with the same as you Bow down

Dennis - that's why I went for the first can (connectors were 25mm) but it was just too large Big Cry Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Nice job, look good.

To add a final touch, we need to fit a kind of "sponge" on the bottom of the filter to allow better oil retention.
Any idea about what to fit inside ?

Last bits arrived. I decided to use an angled connector on the can as it would allow the hose to go directly into the intake. I'm also holding the can on with a QuickFist as it dampens vibration and looks a bit more OEM. Has the unexpected advantage of "cuddling" the sensor in the same position as on the metal bracket Thumbs Up
