Is yours a 2.4? Sorry if I'm being thick but I have a German model and everything fits on the turbo side - is there a 3rd "Oz" build-type? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

never heard of this mod before. If you do regular oil and filter changes is it really necessary ? Admittedly it sounds logical so why is it not fitted during design/manufacture ?

Some 20 years ago I made for my RRC VM also an oil catch tank from an old air press filter. An Industrial, rather big type. In and out are easy to connect.I drilled a lot of 3mm holes in the brass filter element to avoid pressure. It was a good solution and easy to clean.

@rossy - it actually has nothing to do with the oil or filter changes.
This is shamelessly adapted from someone elses text... In the Puma engine (at least), excessive blow-by (leakage past the piston rings) of air and fuel vapor creates a positive pressure in the crankcase. There is a valve on the engine block which releases this pressure sending the oily mist back into the air intake just before the turbo where it is sucked in and sent into the intercooler. One hopes that some of it is burned in the turbo... but perhaps that isn't such good news either. On the positive side it requires zero maintenance... unless you include the turbo and intercooler. It may contribute to a dirty MAP. The oil catch can allows the oil to condense, leaving clean(er) air to go back into the turbo. However, it needs emptying every now and again which may be a hassle for the "average" customer (and probably ludicrously expensive if you ask the stealer to do it). Verbal diarrhoea over p.s. well, not quite - I just removed mine ready for the service tomorrow and there's a good 1/5 can full after 4 months (admittedly I drive a lot and quite hard). Some may say it's pointless but it's enough to make me smile Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Quick question if if may?
Why after making several lovely oil breather catch tanks are you routing the a pipe back into the turbo at all? So long as there is a catch tank, you could just leave the catch tank to vent to the atmosphere and block up the hole that goes back into the Turbo. Regards, Mark |

Just in case it isn't 100% efficient - stops drips (yeah, I know about all the other oil in some engines) and stops the oily smell from the gas that passes through. Also leaves all the original pipework, including connector, in place and obviates the need for blocking off a hole...
Doesn't need to be connected, just "tidier" Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

The aust defenders are right hand drive so the power booster for the brakes is on the turbo side which makes it difficult to find a place for the catch can. Have you any idea if the breather from the top of the engine can be swapped to the other side so I can mount the catch can in the same place as yours. Cheers tim. Cess the Taswegian |

Thanks Ze, I'm sure it could be made to look tidy
I'm just confused why anyone would want to connect it back up, after seeing the state of my standard setup, the hose was dripping with oil, the turbo was gunked up and the intercooler had a significant amount of oil in it as well. It must be better for the engine if it wasn't reattached? Just my thoughts.... Regards, Mark |

Aha - sorry, my misunderstanding Both the OP and I have Euro-Pumas with the steering wheel on the wrong side. Not sure about re-routing the hose - presumably it should always be angled downwards to prevent any condensed oil from running back to the valve (or maybe that doesn't matter). I'm looking at a picture of a RHD and it's pretty tight (I thought mine was bad!). Hopefully someone else with a RHD can help? Pope - true Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
