rear door central locking failure('06' Defender)
Hi all.

Had a problem with the central locking on the rear door of our ’06 ‘ Defender. It would lock but not unlock, them it failed to lock at all, but worked on the key okay.

What I discovered, after removing the lining/cover, was the 3 pointed plastic arm,( held in place with two legs in a square hole)which connects the central locking unit rod, via this item to the door lock via a rod, which is secured to the door panel with a integral spreader, to lock in position in the door panel, has worked it way out of the internal door panel.

After pushing the plastic piece back into position , worked the locking mechanism a few times, it gradually worked it way out from the panel till it fell free from the panel. It appears to be only a friction fit, and the two lugs had worn enough to allow it work its way out.

Interestingly it had a hole through the centre, should it have had a screw fitted to spread the legs/lugs, to fix in position ?. No sign of thread cutting to show a screw had been fitted. Thinking about other fixing on the truck which are plastic and use a screw the fix in position , I screwed in a short but fat self tapper in and that seems to have fixed the problem, by spreading the lugs and gripping the panel, no further problems

Hi “Stoker”.

Did think of images, but never took any. Basically its push the rotating arm back into position and put a short/ fat self tapper through it to fix into position..

If you PM me with your email I will set up the offending bit and take a some images and post then to you

Hi EWS

Did you take those photos you mention ?

I seem to have the same problem which developed a couple of days ago - so would be grateful if you could send those photos to help me diagnose the problem

Cheers
Gavin

For three years my rear door would lock but not unlock on the central locking so one day after washing all the gunk out of the front door locks to stop the dreaded bounce back (thread on here somewhere) and curing that problem i thought i might as well do the same to the rear door lock.So i sprayed WD40 in the key hole and into the lock from the door latch area and through the lock button on the inside and hey presto works every time now.Nice easy fix. 2005 Td5 90 XS
