Big no-no! But if you just take off the cat, drill out the honeycomb material and refit, there is no way LR will know about it. I plan to do just that in a week's time. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Well, for starters, if you improve reliability, then it means they can't make money off you. Also, how do they ensure that everyone's mods improves reliability? Simpler to just ban everything. Centre silencer removal is also a big no-no. But then again if you are friendly with your service manager, sometimes they let these things slip by. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I was told that any failure or claim that is repudiated due to a modification is because LR have proven the failure to be due to the modification......
So what failures can occur from removing the catalytic converter? "Overlanding With Bruce" - Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@OverlandingwithBruce 11MY Defender 130 23MY Defender 110 D300 HSE X-Dynamic https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzrHKcjA-LJ470_H4QwPgVA |

Is it worth taking a chance though?
I have about 20 months of warranty left |

Yes it is risky and you may need to argue the point but I have not read anything that proves any negative effects on any components because of these mods.
Constantia LR have done some decats as well as intercoolers on their customers vehicles according to Elton and the service manager, so I am sure this could even be used to argue the point. Also remember you are improving efficiency's, you are not modifying to make your Landy faster ..... (i hope) Another example, I recently did my own brake pads. Now if something goes wrong with my brake calipers they may say it was due to my workmanship. They would have to prove it......but how many complaints have you heard related to brakes that need warranty claims? Weigh up your risks. In my opinion. Do the intercooler first and leave the decat for later. If you are worried have LR fit the parts. Yes true. Infact I also fitted my own brake pads at a 6th of the quoted LR price |

With just removing the honeycomb of the cat and refitting will the flow performance be less than a dedicated Decat ?

A few guys have done this in South Africa and have reported better power up hills and cooler interiors. I dont know though. I am considering it.... But read somewhere a guy got a "hollow" sound to the exhaust from doing it. |

Yes, I think we definitely should've measured the airflow as well. Think I must get my intercooler cleaned out, and see if it makes a difference in driveability |

FYI on the decat
i have done it 2 months ago, (taking out the internals of the original pipe) and absolutely no interior sound difference from the exhaust on a 110. You hear the turbo a bit more and on the outside it's rough what comes out as sound (as in "nice") This is also without middle box. On a 90 both mods do make a bigger interior difference i was told.(booming) Only one thing about which i am not sure yet. I get recently (but not directly "since" doing the decat) overboost failures of the turbo. Not sure if it's my damaged/repaired harness causing this or the decat. Looking at the scangauge i susect the harness as the turbo simply doesnt step down and blows till 1.6 kg once coming at 2000rpm, triggering the fault code. Have a replacement harness coming in today so hopefully i'll know by monday. |

Pete Bell advised me against de-cat due to possible back-pressure problems with the standard turbo.
I don't know much about these things - just reporting what a professional said Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
