So you've upgraded the tweeters then but used the original grilles? Am I reading that correctly. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Correct, as you can see on the link above the Focal I 1000VRS come as a set with the tweeters. The professionals were supposed to only make the power-wiring for the sub, but when I picked her up they had already installed the front speakers as shown on the picture from my last reply.

They did a good job all the same. Nice and neat. I wonder how then made the aftermarket tweeter fit the original grille.. I highly doubt it was a push / clip fit as the original. Probably glued. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

So I've been looking to change the ICE and have PM'd Steve for advice which as usual he gave gladly.
Now I've approached 2 local suppliers, first never called back and the seconded needed a prompt! Evil or Very Mad Promised a call after our conversation, I'm still waiting Twisted Evil so obviously they have too much work!
So today I've been into a larger dedicated ICE store in Norwich and they have recommended the following;
Pioneer DEHX8500DAB, Hertz speakers, JBL Sub and Amp (can't remember brand).
Now I was looking to get a Kenwood, have been advised that the Bluetooth is not as good as the Pioneer as its a bolt on? Also the Pioneer can be manually change to green to match the dashboard colours, not a reason to go for it but a nice point in my eyes Rolling with laughter
Now views on Pioneer most welcome..........or stay with Kenwood or something else? _______________________________

Errr Kenwood. Whistle Thumbs Up No honestly the Pioneer having the BT as an extra is nothing bad about it mine can have it added extra too (on my Kenwood) and has many features where as some units have it built in whilst probably just as good it maybe an issue if the mic is built in and not externally mopuntable due to the engine noise of the Defender. The Pioneer feature of the display colour is nothing but mostly standard to most Kenwood's cheaper units tend to have green and red (maybe blue) where as units of a higher spec / value even have variable illumination so if you liked you could have purple on a Monday and green on a Friday. The KVT 526DVD does anyway although at around £400 probably a little expensive...

Me personally I'd go for Kenwood but I am biased... All of the brands you mention though however are pretty much premium brands known for good quality.

Feel free to PM again if you have any further questions..

(P.s. The profession ICE fitters / suppliers mostly seem to be rubbish and will often use cheap parts... If you were closer I'd do it for you..

Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Steve many thanks for the offer to help with the install Bow down
Too be honest Kenwood DAB was always my first choice, slight confusion now Pioneer DAB mentioned, hence asking the question. As I said the actual colour change was not an issue just seemed to lead towards the Pioneer after visiting the shop. I originally had no issue with the "bolt on" BT, your mentioning of the mic also throws something new into the mix Big Cry oh what to do Question
As I'm using a borrowed Parrot clipped to the visor anything will be an improvement! _______________________________

With the Kenwood BT units they can be placed under a seat if you have a 110 or any other place in a 90 providing it's clean and most of all dry say behind a front seat. They have one cable that connects to the HU and the other is an external mic that you can mount anywhere you like again somewhere clean and dry and where ever sounds best over the phone so near the driver. They aren't cheap but compatible with nearly every phone on the market. Dependant on HU capable of accessing phone book and text messaging along with BT music streaming where required. Also on certain Kenwood HU's you can get "made for iPod" features which when connected will power & charge the iPod / iPhone and play music direct from the iPod or iPhone through the HU. If you have a DVD capable unit you can also get a cable to play video's also but that's just an extravagance really as you cannot watch anything whilst driving anyway.

I expect your a little confused now? Laughing

P.s. Heard good things about the DAB HU's Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

My new Kenwood H U is the dogs Censored . Now have 11days of music on the USB stick and used the Kenwood software to set up the playlists. CD is excellent FM very good reception and quality and the DAB is fantastic. Drove all over the Welsh valleys at the weekend and the DAB didn't miss a beat. Even though the Kenwood DAB aerial is fixed to the heated front windscreen it works faultlessly with the screen on or off. Thanks to Custom90Steve for his excellent advice Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

Steve,

Great! All I need to do to finish is remove the sub-cubby unit and trim it with black vinyl to match the main cubby (and I might fit a light in the main cubby - your old one - at the same time).

BUT -- I do have an issue with the head unit, which you may be able to help with! Probably inevitable after my last, bragging, post.

I have a USB stick on which I have save a lot of music in MP3 format. My PC recognises all the music files as valid MP3 and plays them fine. The folder/file structure appears to conform to the Kenwood requirements, ie there a top level folder "my_music" (or similar), then a subfolder for each artist "artist_name" then subfolders for each album "album_name" containing the mp3s.

When I connect the USB stick to the unit, the unit spends a long while scanning the device (there's a lot of music!) but and then displays a message "no music files found" or some such. I cannot figure out why.

I've looked at the Kenwood page on audio file formats (http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/audiofile/index.php?model=KDC-6051U&lang=english) and I can't see anything I am not complying with.

I am a bit baffled! Has anyone else either had trouble like this, or successfully played music on a USB stick with a KDC-6051U?

Thanks! Thumbs Up

Blackwolf - Firstly a firmware update maybe available for your HU. That may cure it in it's self. Failing that try altering the way the music is contained in folders as it should only load the music files you require and not the whole lot. I.e. It should display the names only when you look for a particular genre or artist. With mine although I use an iPod and not USB stick it does not load and try and show all the music contained on the iPod it goes though menus until you click on the album you want and then loads the list of songs for that actual album. I have the feeling yours is trying to load all the songs as individuals rather than in folders and the folders should not be opened unless you want the actual artists named file to open. Failing all of this try a high speed memory stick or change to an iPod I'm sure your HU could accept it.

Thanks Steve. I have sussed the problem, it's me being a plonker and failing to RTFM correctly!

[Embarrassed mode] I had inadvertently exceeded the max permitted number of folders allowed on a single device (which is only 255) and that causes an error message that doesn't even hint at the problem! [/Embarrassed mode]
All sorted now with a little reorganization.

Thanks for all your really useful advice throughout my upgrade! Thumbs Up

Your welcome. Thumbs Up It maybe worth checking if there is a valid firmware update for your HU model on the Kenwood site as they often come with improved function and compatibility. There may not be one available but if there is it's relatively simple providing you follow the instructions with doing it step by step. Wink $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R
