Thanks for all the input from everyone, I do quite a lot of my driving in Poland, travelling back and forth at least 12/14 times a year as I contract out there. So for me the speed pulse signal is what I'll go for.
This is a very interesting section, lots of good advise and food for thought as I'm soundproofing my DCPU at the moment before deciding on other upgrades for my audio system. I spend a lot of time driving so want a decent sound system, problem is I'd not know a decent sound system if it jumped up and bit me, so I'll carry on reading this section. John

For good equipment I always go for high power where possible along with reasonable to higher price. Always had good quality kit this way. Focal, Kenwood, Kicker, Clarion and so on all good. And don't ever use Halfords that is where the rubbish can come from. Admittedly some premium brands are available through them both on-line and in-store but the prices are far higher. I personally prefer to purchase from dedicated brand suppliers and often will cut you a deal too. I've always used Just Kenwood for kenwood gear the best prices I have found on-line and In Car Music Leyton London for Kicker gear. And Car Audio Direct for consumables and bit's and pieces. Don't like nor trust Alpine quality much. (Exercising freedom of speech here) $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Forgot to mention. As D J mentions with his my HU too is apparently "incorrectly wired" to allow easier usage. This said I don't use much Visuals on mine but do if I feel like it. Mainly music playing is for me instead not videos. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Does anyone know what has happened to Defendoor and the rear 6x9 speaker housing they used to sell? Went to buy a pair today and they are gone. Or am I getting my manufacturers mixed up?

A few days late I know but noticed these today: http://www.devon4x4.com/index.php?page=sho...;Itemid=14

Perhaps available through Mud direct maybe.

Have spoken to Defendoor direct and they have a limited amount of redundant stock of the rear 6x9's.

Am in the process of ordering them. Happy days.

Now, do I have to have an Amp in the back for the speakers or can i get away with the standard wiring attached to them? I have an active Alpine subwoofer that i will wire seperately for bass so 6x9's will be for depth.

regards

You can run the 6x9's off the HU but it'll be asking a lot out of it and you won't get full power out of them. AFAIK most Hu's are approx 4x 50w RMS outputs but 6x9's are often double that for RMS (at least).
On the flip side a small two channel Amp for driving just the two 6x9's should be relatively cheap again dependant on brand power ect.

For that money I would go for:

This as the HU (has variable illumination colour) : http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/car-audio.aspx/kdc-bt52u-car-radio

And this for speakers (best quality most expensive): http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/car-audio.aspx/kfc-s1094-speakers

Or these (still good quality just a bit cheaper): http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/car-audio.aspx/kfc-e1064-speakers

All personal choice though. Smile

HU is straight swap wiring wise and the same single DIN fit as OE LR Radio. Speakers are 10cm same as OE LR fit again just may need electrical plugs fitting and mounting holes drilling other than that easy as pie. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Steve,

Lazy of me I know, but there is now so much info on upgrading the Landy ICE that I have succeeded in educating myself into indecision.

If the budget was higher - C£800 including fitting what would you suggest, it's a 90 Puma with full noisekiller soundproofing, would mostly listen to voice, rock and blues.

A Kenwood KVT526DVD system with Kenwood BT300 add on along with upgrading all four 10cm speakers with the Kenwood top of the range equivilent size. All available from Just Kenwood. I would imagine you could get all of this for that budget. not sure about the fitting though but I would seriously think about doing it yourself it isn't as difficult as it may first seem. If you do decide to you know who to ask for advice by PM. If you have sound proofing also that will help also. If you want a sub, amp & tweeters ect then it will cost a considerable amount more on-top but worth it equally. Thumbs Up

Shame your so far away or I would happily fit it in for you.

I have a question for the Kenwood gurus, and would be grateful for advice.

A few months ago I upgraded my system and as part of this fitted a Kenwood KDC-6051U head unit. I have been very pleased with the result but two things surprise me.

1) When the unit is off, there are no lights on it anywhere, which makes it quite tricky to locate the ON/OFF button in the dark, and

2) If the unit is on and therefore illuminated, the lighting doesn't dim when the vehicle's sidelights are turned on. (There is a connection for "dimmer" mentioned in the manual, pin A6 IIRC, but it isn't connected in the supplied stub harness).

The unit is quite well-spec'ed and I am surprised at these two apparent shortcomings. Does anyone know if there's something I've missed which can enable them?

Thanks!

JJbing - Your welcome. Thumbs Up

Blackwolf - I think I know what your getting at. With mine I leave it on all the time so never had a cause to turn it off? Mine has an auto dimming sensor when the screen is out so in the dark much like sat navs it dims brightness according to to the light. I can see what your getting at it must be bright at night.
(yours probably does have this feature)

Just had a look at the installation details / manual for your HU and I see the wire colours and pin you mention but it doesn't show what to do with it. Confused
Done a bit of digging on-line for you and found this comment on a US forum:

"I did get a reply from Kenwood - they said that the wire from the iPod interface is supposed to go to the headlight switch. And that it basically tells the device when the cars lights are on - and dims the Kenwood display's lighting. I thought it was supposed to sync up the dimming with the interior lighting as you dim that."

Basically what I gather from that the pin / wire (should be orange and white I believe) needs to be connected to the dipped lights feed which will then dim the illumination when lights are on and brighten when off. Much like the 12v blue remote wire can turn on an amp. The feed from the lights dims the HU. You could easily do that by tapping in.

I wouldn't normally recommend to do this but if you take the wire (Dimmer) direct to the battery positive with the HU turned on it SHOULD** dim the HU illumination. This way you can at least know it's what is needed. Then wire in correctly to the dipped headlights cable.

Hope this makes sense. And be careful if you do give it a go but I'm 99% sure this is the issue.
