Interestingly if you go here: http://safarisnorkel.com/snorkel/ss575hf/ss575hf.htm
Same snorkel but without the extra black plastic tube, presumably for the TD5 Mermoto |

This is what worries me. The 581 is for the puma and boasts high volume air intake to keep up with the thirst for air on the TDCi. Have I been sold this which is a TD5 one just repackaged and puma name stuck on it to achieve a higher mark up?

I am relying on my memory a bit here but I think my recollection is correct. I had the SS581HF fitted to my 2007 Defender in 2009 just after I purchased the vehicle second hand. I remember there was confusion with the part number at the time as the SS580HF part number was listed in the Safari price list with the agent but when he rang Safari up to check the availability and order one, Safari advised that SS580HF had been replaced with the new SS581HF.
Mine is the 4 bolt version and has given no trouble. I am not aware of any problems with the SS581HF and plenty of Puma engined Defenders have them fitted here. Once again I am relying on memory but I think the change was to do with ease of fitment. On an ARB fitting/ price list from 2010 the following was listed: SS581HF Diesel 07 on TD4 2.4 ltr and 99 on TD5 2.5 litre (revised version replaces SS580HF). SS575HFABS 99 to 07 Diesel Models (relocation of OE aerial required). SS550HF 4/94 to 99 diesel models. SS525HF County V8 3.5 litre carb models. SS500HF to 3/94 diesel models. I would think that some of the kit numbers refer to all the components required to fit it to a certain model while possibly the part number in the snorkel body might refer to that one component which might be common to a few kits but I could be wrong (i.e. a SS757HF body in the SS580HF kit, especially if it was transitional between models). I might ring Safari direct tomorrow (Monday Australian time) to confirm if the 581 is the current version. Hope this helps a little. |

I contacted Safari today and explained the problem. Unfortunately there is good news and not so good news.
The person I spoke to said that SS580HF is now the the correct current part number for the 2007 on Defender snorkel (RAI). As I had said in an earlier post that this was the original number but then it was changed to SS581HF. The lady at Safari said that she thought there were supply problems withsome of the components of the SS581HF and so they are now back to the SS580HF part number as per the web site although the blurb is wrong. The not so good news; The representative could not tell me if that meant that the snorkel body was the original style with hidden bolts or the style of the SS581HF with the 4 external bolts on the snorkel body to mount it to the wing. I asked about the number on the snorkel body and she indicated that this was probably the number for that sub component of the kit.. I have seen both types fitted to Puma's here in the LROC that I am a member. Sorry I could not be of more help at this stage but I am afraid that was the extent of the knowledge of the person I spoke to. In May 2012 apparantly only 17 Defenders were sold nationally so it is not a high volume seller like Toyota here so knowledge is lacking slightly in some areas. U.K distributors are listed below. Fantastic effort! Thank you. I guess that I will have to stick with what I have got. I have witten to the the company who supplied it and I should imagine they will be hard pushed to get more up to date information than that. I know one of the main selling points that safari have used is that SS581HF has the highest air flow and that it was specifically designed for the Defender with the 2.4 Puma TDCi engine. The only question now to ask is does this TD5/Puma (SS580HF) one have the same high volume air flow as the old one? If it does not to me there was little point changing it.

I will attempt a little more digging as I have the SS581HF fitted which is a four bolt. If I happen to crack the body four wheel driving I'll want to replace it. Obviously a 3 bolt body won't fit a four bold external. I might follow this up with ARB who supplied mine and see what they say.
I would have thought a TD5 sucks a fair bit of air considering it is a 2.5 litre so if the snorkel coped with that I would think it should be o.k. for the 2.4 litre. Obviously you will probably only notice a problem at full song on the motorway if the engine is starved for air if the snorkel bore is restrictive. The folk at AULRO forum might also add more light on this as I'm sure that there will be plenty who use both types on their Defenders. |

The technical advisor at Arbil phoned me this morning in response to my email.
He comments basically agreed with 4wheeler. SS575HF was developed for the TD5 Defender SS580HF was developed for the TD4 Defender. This was superceded bu the SS581HF which is external bolted one. However due to a tooling problem the SS581HF has been discontinued and the SS580HF is the current model for the TD4. The main body of the snorkel for the SS575 is the same as for the SS580 so ignore the actual stamp inside the snorkel body. The retail price of the SS580 is £180-181 whereas the retail price of the SS581 I have been told should be lower. However if anyone wants to collect a SS580HF RAI from Billing we could do a Def 2 price at £170 Brendan |

Good to have a second confirmation on what I was told.
I wonder if tooling problem means smashed die. It is interesting that the cost of these RAI's is around 70% - 90% more expensive to purchase here in Australia. It means you could almost purchase from the U.K. and freight it back to Australia and still be in front. So depressing! In fact almost every Defender accessory can be purchased from the U.K. and shipped to Australia via express air freight cheaper than we can purchase here! |

I will be now going ahead with putting this one on but will wait for the weather to improve as the 110 cannot get in my garage and I don't want to do it at work. Might do it in stages, dry fit the snorkel on an evening and then seal it all at the weekend.
