Right, I'd say you HAVE the old one, the newer one is easier to fit, the bolt holes are in a different place and they look more sleek. It seems Safari aren't quite sure on the info, like Brendan says, the blurb is mixed up Crying or Very sad

Another reason I was worried was that I already have a LR one fitted and I had measured the holes that need to be drilled and the 581 was ok to fit. Fortunately it looks like the 580 will also be ok

Ah yeah, I was thinking of why it was easier fit, when the snorkel is pushed in, one of the bolts is a nightmare to put a nut on.... With the later one, it's easier.

But isn't leeds saying that the 580 (which is I think what I have) the current model and the 581 is no longer made?

Two styles...

I ordered the newer top one last year, looks nicer IMHO and is much easier to fit. The lower one is the old type! Not sure why you got the old type - worth checking they havn't messed the order up.

Just to add to the confusion generated by good old iPads, mix up of blurb on Safari website, change of distributors etc. Retail price on SS580HF is about £180 whereas the SS581HF seems to be £198.

Was asked during the week regarding snorkels for Pumas

Cost (though I am far from a wealthy person) is not an issue but getting the correct and best product is a top priority for me.I have just spoken to Wifey who says she paid £215. That is quite a wedge for her and she saved for a while to get it.

Sure is confusing. I think the new one is the 581 with four bolts but for some reason they (importers) are not supplying it. Instead they are sending the 580 ( old model ).

However if you go here: http://www.safarisnorkel.com/snorkel/SS580HF/ss580hf.htm

This above folder was Sept 2008

Where as here:http://www.safarisnorkel.com/snorkel/ss581hf/ss581hf.htm

Was March 2010

Strange thing is that both web pages seem to have been updated in 2010. I think Safari web design have some issues?

Here is the directory I found: http://www.safarisnorkel.com/snorkel/

I suppose we both would like the newest version but the old one looks nicer as you dont see the bolts. It may prove more difficult to fit so maybe I will wait for Boy to do his first! Can you video it : )

Me? Video? Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

I will try or take photos but if I have an older model I may well send it back. I will never manage to buy a new defender again so when I do fit something to it i want it to be the best available. Lets see what happens and what feed back we get here first. I wanted it fitted by the end of the month ready for this years Spanish trip but that now might be in doubt.

May I suggest you do not fit it until this confusion is sorted out.

I will email the tech advisor at the importers to try and get some clarification.

The current importer is listing SS580HF as 'Defender TD4/TD5 99+ 2.5L Diesel'

The old importer list SS581HF as Safari snorkel for the Defender Td5 and Puma engine

SS575 is not on current Safari Snorkel model list for TD5/TD4

Will the SS575 be an easy straight forward fit on a TD4?

Want to add more confusion to the snorkel pot?

Have just seen a snorkel as Defender 300Tdi / Td5 / Tdci Snorkel read the more detailed description and it 'Suits 300Tdi and Td5 models only'

So confusion.com reigns!

Thanks Brendan, all seems pretty odd for Safari to have two different models on its site without any expanation.

There's some good historical information including part numbers on these threads...

The SS580 was listed as suitable for the Puma....I've got one fitted to mine... Thumbs Up

Just looked - safari have changed the design Big Cry Big Cry 4 bolts each side of the snorkel base around the intake - tightened from the outside - I like

It is indeed undoubtedly alot easier to fit than the SS580 but you will still end up with the four mounting bolts visible and the 'wasted base' shaped to contain the four bolts! For looks the SS580 has no visible mounting bolts and allthough harder to fit looks better in my opinion!
