Hi Custom90steve,
You only need to remove the flare arch guard which is removed by pushing the centre pin of the plastic rivets through the rivet. Be careful not to lose the centre pin. Push them through gently and that way you can keep track of them. This gives access to the ducting and drains for sealing. It just depends on your need for sealing the system. The bottom studs are accessed from the guard while the top stud us accessed from the engine bay and top of the inner guard. I removed the top guard intake blank so you can more easily fit the nut and washer to the stud and to tighten it all up. It depends what tools you have. The standard metal clip has not tended to rust on my vehicles but we don't have to deal with salt unless we drive on beaches. While great fun to do, it is something I tend to shy away from. I prefer the sand dunes of the Australia deserts. In the snorkel kit there are rivets for the air box assembly. I removed my air box without drilling out the OEM rivets as it just sits in a mounting cradle but space is tight and it was a major pain to do. There is ducting replacement kit from Nugget Stuff here in Australia which is another solution to sealing. For me it was a toss up as to whether to get a store to fit the intake or do it myself. I have fitted a few snorkels to my 4x4's now and relatively speaking, the Defender fit out is easy compared to others. The main problem it that the Defender is basically hand assembled and things don't seem to align too easily. I too am OCD, so purchasing a Defender does tend to mess with your head at times! |

Why is the airbox needed to remove?
Is it for access or simply to get at the ducting. I have managed to remove the piping from the wing to airbox keeping the airbox in situ. Only water entry points I can think of. (Please correct if nessisary) is; Airbox drain hole. Airbox outlet to intake ducting pipe. (Airbox female, ducting male.) Intake ducting pipe to inner wing. Snorkel to outer wing. Airbox to ducting being the tricky one I'd have thought. As another member here has done I want to get a SS screen mount bracket and bond it rather than drilling the screen frame. Looking forward to this one. Thank-you for all the tips, very useful. |

If you have removed the piping without removing the airbox then no need to remove the airbox.
In my 2013 TDCI there were two drain points not counting ducting connections. One in the base of the airbox and another in the intake piping adjacent to the actual intake in the base of the box section to the right of the intake. So, from memory on my Defender, sealing was from airbox to snorkel: Airbox drain. Intake duct to airbox joint. Dust /water chamber drain. Intake to water / dust chamber joint. Duct intake to inner wing panel joint. Snorkel body to smaller external intake gasket (as supplied with kit). |
