still not got to the bottom of my sh!t running.
to be fair it SEEMS to be running better / well most of the time but definately not all of the time. seems like fuel starvation to me but when this happens not only is there a definate lack of power but it sounds different too (obviously perhaps?)....... I know this may sound like I'm grasping at straws here - originally I thought it was probably egr and now less convinced about that. do you think there's a chance that the wastegate on the turbo isn't closing properly? how can I tell and would it definately bring up an MIL ? any thoughts suggestions etc would be very much appreciated. |

Is it constantly running duff or accasionally?
If occasionally, when does it start? |

there appears to be absolutely no ryhme or reason to when it runs well / not well.
symptoms include lack of power / rough / less responsive (making gear changes difficult. |

Waste gate?
The Pumas variable vane turbocharger, fitted to the exhaust manifold, makes it possible to vary the exhaust gas flow of the turbine, dependent on engine operation. This improves the power transfer to the turbine wheel and compressor, particularly at low engine speeds, thus increasing the boost pressure. The guide vanes are opened progressively as the engine speed increases so that the power transfer always remains in balance with the required charger speed and the required boost pressure level. Variable vanes facilitate better use of the exhaust gas energy so as to further improve the efficiency of the turbocharger and thus of the engine, compared to the more conventional 'wastegate control'. Advantages: High torque at both high and low engine speeds Continuous and optimum adjustment for all engine speeds No wastegate valve required, exhaust energy is better utilised, less back-pressure in conjunction with same compressor work Low thermal and mechanical load improves engine power output Lower emissions Optimised fuel consumption over the entire engine speed range A Direct Current (DC) rotary actuator motor operates a drive shaft. The drive shaft is connected to the vanes by an actuating lever. Adjustment of the vanes is achieved by moving the actuating lever. When the drive shaft is turned, a signal is created at the end of the drive shaft; this feedback signal is used to determine the angular position of the vanes. This information is transmitted to the Engine Control Module (ECM). The turbocharger is designed for fail safe operation. If a fault occurs regarding the control of the unit, the vanes default to the fully open position so as to produce minimum boost. The ECM detects any malfunctions in the stepper motor and generates Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic13065.html http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic12511.html Brian. |

so its not the waste gate then ..... will have a look at removing the connectors to the filter head as mentioned in post. will also check connecting rods to vv on turbo make sure they are nice and loose too. lorryman100 - thanks very much. |

Can you say it does it more when cold or hot ? long run or short runs ?

That was, TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No.LTB00254/2010 issued on the 20th January 2010. As Caterhams vehicle profile is for a 2011 Puma, chances are it will have the new extended loom fitted from initial build?

had a v quick at loom last night but couldn't find what I was look for
funny you mention the wiring though as I've always been v suspicious of the quality - in part because of all the exposes wires (ie not tape wrapped near plugs), also the purle wire in the rear o/s quater (some have use this permanent live for an aux outlet in the rear) had the connector fall off due to corrosion (connector replaced and had just fallen / corroded off again ), also had an ecu go down and had to be replaced I did however drain a little off the oil filter last night and disconenct / re-connect pipes (generally all ok - a little crap in the filter - a bit of what looks like silt). can ran great this morning - I'm tempted to say it ran smoother than I've ever know it too (but that may be wishful thinking will let you know later after driving home again). hope you'ev all had a good weekend? |
