Was this LR Stellenbosch? Usually they are quite good about this sort of thing. Overfill in the gearbox should not have done anything bad, it would just have leaked when the gearbox got hot and the oil expanded, as per the technical bulletin SSM34407 - New Getrag 6 Speed MT82 Transmission - Correct Fill Level, available at: http://landrover.megacloudstorage.com/# -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Good to know - no harm done then. Yes, I service with LR Stellenbosch. Oil must have been factory fill...

Jah, mine came from the factory with the upper tub not secured properly nor was the front axle up to standard, much less the gearbox. Btw, if you want to do in-between engine oil changes, you can get the oil from Lube Marketing (021 511 0574), in Paarden Eiland (http://g.co/maps/sv9d3) -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I changed my Gbox oil very soon after buying it new and 3 litres came out. Must be a factory issue. I don't think that would be a major surprise when you hear all the other problems that have been assembly related !

If you're doing a lot of gravel travel you should consider changing your engine oil every 10k instead of the mandated 20k. Especially if you're filling up with 500ppm diesel. |

I do 10Kkm oil changes regardless, and also after every overlanding trip. I also use 2SO with every tank -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Daniele’s site is great. A lot to read!
What’s interesting is that on page 880 of the document “2010.06_Defender_MY07_on_Workshop_Manual_Complete.pdf” it says that the instrument cluster has an indicator on the left hand side, in the blank screen, that lights when the transfer box is in the low range. Look for item 24 “Transfer box low range indicator”. I’ve never seen this illuminated, even when new. I wonder when this was introduced and if it is installed on anyone’s Defender. BTW anyone know what item 7 is “High ECT indicator”, on the top panel. Merlin |

Never seen it illuminated either, whether in a V8, 2.8i, 300Tdi, Td5 or Puma -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

2SO+10000Kkm interval is not a good combination if you use 913A/913B oil. WIth 913C, maybe it would last longer. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

Thanks for all the useful info on the oil change intervals - 20000km is quite long for the dusty southern Africa conditions. Yes, we tow a lot and yes we do at least two overland trips a year (Nam, Bots, Ang, Zam and Zim!) – my landy is new and I have changed my engine oil (not diffs and gearbox) at 10000km, I guess it would be good idea to get into the habit of changing diffs + t-case + gearbox + engine every 10000km regardless). I use 50ppm diesel with a dose (200ml) of 2SO (JASO FB) every second/third tank of diesel (I do not bother with 2SO if I fill up with 500ppm in Nam, Bots, Zim and Zam)

Willem, each to their own, but I think every 10k for the diffs etc is overdoing it. LR recommend 80k for diffs and t box, and 160k for g box. I've decided to cut that in half, as well as replacing air filters and fuel filters every 20k. I don't do a lot of towing though.
