Scangauge to kill EGR MIL?
Just "freefalling" here, so apologies if this is a stupid question...

If I just unplug the EGR, I get a MIL after a few cycles. I read somewhere that you can use Scangauge to get rid of the light permanently. Is this correct and which Scangauge would I need?
Matt

p.s. I'm just experimenting, Gary - I'm still using your remaps as well Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Yes but Gary (Alive) has rigged my final remaps so the EGR wakes up and self-cleans when switching off. I had some problems yesterday with heat and power loss (even with the remaps) and I'm looking at several possible causes (sticking EGR, grubby/busted MAF, CHT cooked with engine blanket etc.)
I have a long trip coming up and the nearest dealer (I trust) is a long way away and can't look at the car for 2 weeks Sad

Plus I'm just curious about what Scangauge can do Smile Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Most/All diagnostic tools will reset the MIL light but if the EGR remains unplugged the MIL will illuminate again as the EGR has failed the test cycle because it is unplugged. The only way to permanently have the MIL switched off when the EGR is unplugged is to do so through rewriting the EMS software as Gary has done for you with the remap file.
Have a read of this post as it may be worthwhile getting this mod from Gary:

I'm with K9F on the scangauge 2. Pound for pound it is a very handy and versatile tool all packaged up nicely and easily blends in with the dash. The scangauge 2 allows you to clear dtc's (tested) which illuminate the MIL lamp and the new software versions also allow you to display pending dtc's (untested) as well. The standard gauges cover most of the engine monitoring systems and those that are not covered can be programmed into x gauge, an additional set of codecs for sensors on the Ford PWM and CANSF protocols. The standard gauges show, Manifold Absolute Pressure/Boost, Miles Per Gallon, Kilometres Per Gallon, Miles Per Litre, Liters Per 100Km, Kilometres Per Litre, Miles Per Hour, Kilometres Per Hour, Revolutions Per Minute, Throttle Position Sensor, Water Temperature, Average Fuel Economy, Trip Fuel Cost, Cost Per Mile, Battery Voltage, Intake Air Temperature, Gallons Per Hour, Litres Per Hour, Engine Loading, etc.
The additional xgauge codecs available give you BHP, EGR duty cycle, FPr, CHT, Fuel pump duty cycle, Barometric pressure, fuel tank level in %, Fuel pump pulse widths etc.
The scangauge e is suited more to the eco friendly minded driver as it is designed more for eco driving, giving info on real time fuel use and your real time carbon footprint, so not really applicable to a defender which has the aerodynamics of a 3 bed semi on wheels and the fuel usage which mirrors this fact. It also does not give you access to as many gauges as the scangauge 2 and does not allow you to read and clear faults, or has the x gauge function.

Just my tuppence worth.

Cheers Brian Thumbs Up

I actually already have a "EGR closed only" remap from Gary (he has excelled himself with customer support Bow down ) but I have also been looking at all sorts of possibilities to just delimit the speed (I have a Matzker device) and kill the EGR without any software mods, one reason being my 110 had "judder issues" with almost all remaps. These however seem to have resolved themselves in some weird way after an engine fault Shocked
I'm posting it separately as it covers several issues. I would be interested to know what you think...

The Matzker device is an external software mod. It still does the same thing as a remapped file only more expensive than getting a OEM fuel file with the EGR closed from Alive. The EMS is programmed with parameters for the operation of the EGR and the only way to have the EGR bypassed without showing the MIL is by software. Or mechanically you could blank either end of the EGR and it will operate as normal without allowing the exhaust gases to be recirculated back into the inlet manifold as it will still be plugged in as far as the EMS is concerned. Thumbs Up

Indeed (silly me) - I actually bought it with the 110 from new (with a load of other Matzker goodies) and never sold it as I could never get the 600 quid Shocked back. Very nice device though - my kind of thing Laughing Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Wouldn't mechanically blanking the EGR cause a MIL? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Not an expert - perhaps a good idea to start your own thread as something like "Help! Blue smoke and warning light on"

@copey28, I should be down your way on Friday or Saturday taking the dogs to the beach. Drop me a pm if you want to meet up and I will bring a diagnostic tool with me, unless of course the one you ordered arrives and you have it fixed by then. Whistle Thumbs Up
