Because LR are covering their ar5e in case you get it wrong .... cant blame a stuffed engine on them .... simples Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

If you have a snorkel then it's really up to you. However, diff breathers are needed, engine, electrics etc. I hate wading and try to avoid it at all costs because of the problems it can create. Never understood the obsession with it (not saying you have that, but just generally when it comes to landrovers)
Oh, and if you have a puma, you cant get a breather on the gearbox without dropping it. |

For once Mike I agree with you other than perhaps a ford crossing like Tarr steps. Driving into bomb holes full of water is a sure fire way of ruining a vehicle especially a Puma. With the cost of what could go wrong / damage you'd probably save money by buying an old tdi and using that + it wont have as many electrics. |

Don't think my old tdi has any electrics I get enough water in when it rains without going in a river. 50cm doesnt seem that deep, but maybe it keeps the carpets dry. The battery is right up the top in a d3 so it might be something to do with that, probably wouldn't be good to immerse the battery. td5 ecu is under the drivers seat, puma has some electrics under the drivers seat too depending on options/MY. plus breathers as above.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but it has reminded me of something I noticed last time I was under the bonnet.
On my MY11, I noticed that on the passengers side (RHD) towards the rear of the inner wing there are three small-bore black plastic pipes poking up which didn't seem to go anywhere, they just ended there clipped together with their tops turned over. So, I had a quick look underneath with a torch, and they appear to be routed to the front and rear diffs and the third towards the gearbox or transfer case. So, do they now fit breathers as standard on the Puma? Pete |

they always have fitted them as std to all Defenders.

It can't do all the electrics any good if you go deeper, especially the alternator but then that must get soaked when driving in rain anyway For me it's the muddy silt that does equal harm gets in everywhere, radiator, swivels seals, electrics, chassis all the nooks and crannies and you can never get it all out again
