I hardly use first always second to pull away I just lift off the clutch and hold it till it reaches a steady speed then lift off then accelerate. I even pulled away at a traffic light in third once in the same way 2012 Fuji White 110 Flattened

I know trucks have a stronger compound in the metal for the lower gears to help with the strain of taking away from a standstill and the rugging the gears get when stuck or when traction is lost and wheels are struggling for grip. If Defender gearboxes use the same idea i just hope they have a stronger 2nd gear for all these 2nd gear heroes. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Unladen, on the flat and downhill, especially in heavy moving traffic (and if I'm too lazy) I often pull gently away in 2nd - doesn't seem to be much more clutch slip than in 1st Wink However, if I want to get away faster or with any load at all (including even the dogs), 1st every time. Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

They don't, it is a standard 82 gearbox from Ford Transit. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

Same here, unladen and flat or downhill (very rare around here Wink ) I also drive off in 2nd gear from time to time.
No need to ride the clutch, 2nd on the Puma is not that much different from 1st gear on my Td5. Peter,

Tried this today. Can see the point if you need a (relatively) nippy get away across a junction, but doing it regularly must put some extra strain on things. Think I'll stick to the current 1st , accelerate , pause , wait for it , 2nd , off we go again.
