No doesnt sound like that and only does it after long trips. Sitting in traffic and short trips - no sound.

Could be the early stages of a split in the pipe from turbo to intercooler. The pipe is softer when hot.
Mine did something similar as it started to wear through on the steering column lower clamp bolt. |

Bruce,
Not something to do with the viscous fan? I've had my turbo make an odd noise once. I was towing another Defender on a flatbed trailer at about 1600m above sea-level going up a steep incline, and had done about 400km already, so the turbo was working hard. There was a definite screeching sound from what I thought was the turbo for about 10 seconds, almost as though there was no oil in it. Haven't heard it again, though (and hoping I don't either). Asked for the turbo to be checked at the next service, clean bill of health (for what it's worth). |

Take off the turbo heat shield and check the turbo/manifold gasket for signs of soot. It seems to be a common occurrence on the Puma for the Turbo manifold to warp and allow the exhaust gases to vent out through the now defunct gasket. If this is the case then Nakatanenga (site sponsor) can supply you with an annealed copper gasket which moulds itself to the warp and reseals the join. If the Turbo manifold is OK then it is probably an intercooler pipe that is causing the scream. Check all joints and that none of the hoses are holed anywhere, there is a service bulletin ref a plastic stud on the inner face of the wheel arch line that over time holes the nearby intercooler pipe:
Click image to enlarge I recently had a squeal on my Puma, but only when hot, which sounded like a slipping fan belt? After a bit of investigation it turned out to be a loose pipe clip on the turbo hose causing the pipe to make it's way off the turbo. After repositioning the pipe onto the Turbo, and doing up the pipe clip tightly, the squealing sound has now gone. Click image to enlarge HTH Brian. Thank you for the replies. The fan belt slip describes the sound more closely. Its definately not a loose or split boost pipe.
What is confusing is that it only happens sometimes. I towed a heavy xplorer (caravan) down to Mosselbay in December. Did the trip in 14 or so hours in one go. No squeal, but when I did the return tripthere was the squeal for a short while until the vehicle seemed to cool down. It is almost due for a service now and is under warrenty so will get the stealer to check. Thanks again for the replies. |

Sounds like a leaking turbo to manifold gasket, it's a metal type gasket, had the same problem with mine , it sounded like a police siren.
Cheers Ash. |

After reading the above posts I decided to go outside and remove the turbo heat shield and have a poke about looking for any soot deposits around the Turbo manifold/Exhaust manifold, I did not find any. If the turbo manifold is clean, then I would be double checking all the intercooler hoses again just to make sure that is not the cause.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The black smudges you can see on the join are from my dirty fingers when I ran them over the joint as it appears the Turbo is not tightly secured? It is, as I could not get any movement on the nuts. The cause of the squealing on my Puma was the pipe clip being loose and you can see the before and after pics below. i had these symptons too, there is a post here somewhere about it.
all hoses are good, no soot marks found etc. in the end i put it down to the viscous fan. if i can find the thread i will link it in as it describes the symptons in more detail. Mine is yet to repeat it since the initial post i put up. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
