Bruce, that sounds like a leaking exhaust manifold. Any indication of soot around that area? -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I didn't notice that till you pointed it out. I used it to illuminate the heat shield bolts, if it was the other way around It would light up me instead. I've deleted the picture. |

Reason I thought turbo is because of the sound and it only did it under load or under boost and at no other time. When I released the accelerator and accelerated again it stopped. I read the comment about the clutch but it definitely does not come from that area, unless my ears are playing games on me and I doubt its the fan as I have heard the fan come on in heavy traffic.
Now I am totally guessing with this, and trying to think logically, but I believe that these motors run a variable vein turbo.....I am just wondering if perhaps the veins get "stuck" in one position after a long trip under constant load causing the sound and then release themselves when cooler or asked to work at / stressed at different levels. (hope that makes sense) |

Bruce you can check the control bar between the modulator output arm and the VV control arm. Both ends of the bar should move and it will feel quite loose, there should also be some side to side movement of the bar and both ends should have grease on them. Though I can't see this causing the sound you are on about

Yes eventually after being told many times that nothing was wrong, i insisted that Land Rover remove the exhaust from just below the turbo. When they did that they found that it had been leaking at the joint. Never had a problem again. "Overlanding With Bruce" - Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@OverlandingwithBruce

Thanks all for the above comments. Think I have this problem with mine. Sounds between a scream, and a whoosh noise but only when hot and whilst accelerating hard, like pulling away.
